Finally found a first year Match 54! It is here but in California 10 day gun jail now. I have the stock and it looks pretty good from the sides, but is going to need some work. It has been shortened and the pitch changed, likely for running boar target. Various accouterments have been added and removed from under side of the stock, and the early keyhole sling attachment moved. As you can see in the picture some of these modifications are in the checkering. It will be a fun project seeing how close to normal I can get it back to. More pictures, range report, etc to follow.

Interesting. I guess the two large holes had been made in the factory for the 100 gr steel weights. Anschutz had them in the buttstock and also in the barrel channel cut outs.

Ah ha,I guess I'll find out if it seems to need weight there soon enough. Doesn't feel like it has any there now.

This is what the 100 gram Anschutz Gewichtsstein looks like. Dimensions are 20x62mm. Therre were two holes in the lower part of the buttstocks for them and the pictured cut out in the forearm.

All those I've seen appeared to be steel. My guess is that it's round bar stock, and probably a cheaper grade than barrel steel.

It is steel, always blued on the outside. I have seen them being in the white at the end where they were cut and also blued there.
