Gettin' there and going good now, once I got a few Q&A phone calls made friday to make sure I wasnt wasting my time on a piece of firewood.
Spending as much time scraping around the checkering border and under the grip as anything else now.

Oldblades, sorry to hear that it's such a PITA, but I do look forward to seeing how it turns out. I considered refinishing a spare Ultra Lux stock that I have just to see how it'd turn out, but now that I see what you've encountered here, I doubt I'd try it. I was also lucky that I really liked the look of my Trainer from the factory -- to my eyes, actually better than most of my walnut CZ factory finishes.

I started this stock about the same time oldblades did. Made the same mistakes he did, ended up with the same rock hard muck. Scraped and sanded couple days. Been waiting to see what someone else has done for a finish. Never had much luck with stains on beech or birch. Maybe these gun makers got the right idea with there top coat toner, mud, motor oil what ever you want to call it. Only thing I could think of was MINWAX POLYSHADES. So I went and bought a can of it, Antique Walnut in a satin rattle can. An aluminum baseball bat has more grain than this stock. I don't think it turned out just to bad. You be the judge.

I have been pondering this thing the past couple months. You may be interested to know that I confirmed that there is some reaaaalllllyyyy hard crap underneath, and you about hit the nail on the head.


I almost feel cheap by carrying this discussion on in the absence of George, since he was so vocal about it.


But the fact is that I have a source that dealt with this, and trust his assessment completely. Back in 2011 I was sent a email regarding the problem, and had forgotten about all it.
Wish I had found it before I started.


His conclusion? The only thing close to its toughness off the shelf (for reference) was Minwax Polyshade.
And the only big box store stripper that would remove it was Jasco Premium Paint and Epoxy Remover. Nothing else worked. And IME, I would lean more towards the epoxy skin the way it sanded.



Earlier Trainer stocks were finished in just straight lacquer, but at some point they started adding this stuff underneath.

If this stuff is as hard as you say it is. I'm real happy with it because I'M NOT TAKING IT OFf. My stock prep could have been better around the checkering but did not want to screw it up. It blended in pretty well. If there was any grain in this stock you would be able to see it. The polyshades went on great, no runs, even tone. But it did take one full can to get to this color. Good luck with yours.

Note to self: Do NOT attempt to refinish a CZ Beech stock.
