McGowen barrels

Log in to see fewer ads
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had experience with McGowen barrels? I was reading over their site and it seems like a good value if they shoot well. I am particularly interested in one that is 22" long as I would like to put a rifle together with a 22 or 24 inch barrel and it seems my options are either them or Green Mountain.
I have 4 Green mountain barrels that are 20" long and they shoot great but I have heard little on the 24" in terms of accuracy. Any feedback on either would be much appreciated! Thanks

- Andrew

I have a couple of their centerfire barrels -- drop-in's for Savage -- and they are outstanding. Can't help you on rimfire, but they know what they're about.

Same here. I don't own one but a buddy of mine has a McGowen built 257 Roberts Ackley. It's a beautiful rifle and was put together a long time ago. It's a shooter for sure. Mc Gowen has been around a while so I'm sure you will get good performance out of their stuff.

I have a McGowen Precision barrel in one of my AR uppers (223 Wilde) and give it an A+ rating. Like others have shared, I Have no personal experience on 10/22 barrels but would expect the same quality there as well.

I may just have to order one and give it a try. Something a little different!

I've had several over the years on some centerfire rifles and on a Savage ML2 smokeless inline. All shot very, very well. Great value for the money.

I actually decided to go a different route and ordered a Douglas XX blank today. It will be going to CPC to be fitted and chambered. I found a deal I could not refuse on the blank however I may still order a McGowen for another reciever I have sitting around after this project is done.

Yeah. This ^^^ I have a Douglas barrel from the Chacons fitted to an OEM receiver. Shoots just amazingly well. Here's the rifle and a random 50 yard ammo test:

The McGowen barrels of today share mostly the name only and are a far cry from the old Harry McGowen barrels of the past. I probably bought 7 or 8 barrels from Harry in the day, and they were good barrels. The current McGowen barrels are more consistent than when Harry was knocking them out, and I would say markedly better, overall. I have also had the current McGowen taper-octagon 3 or 4 OEM target barrels (Rem 37, BSA Int'l, Win 52) for me in the past 5 years with great results. I think I would be more inclined to use a new McGowen barrel for a centerfire rifle, however, especially if there were special machining requirements involved, like octagoning, etc., but for rimfire, I would stick with those barrel makers with a solid reputation for specializing in rimfire barrels...meaning the ones who either lap or otherwise incorporate (through Black Magic) a choke or taper in into the bores of their RF barrels.

I have a 16+" McGowan barrel with a Bentz chamber.
It was not any better than the factory barrels and I tried it in our Speed Steel event.
Some fail to eject problems so it now sits on the shelf. Next time I clean it will be switched back for further testing with some different ammo.

I have a 14 1/2" one.

I knew what I wanted so I emailed Kidd first but he turned me down.

Feddersen when he used to post here said email him, so I did and couldn't get past his firewall so he said call me. I did and when I told him what I wanted he couldn't get rid of me fast enough.

Next call was to McGowen. Their reply was "Sure no problem" but it will be 12 weeks. I jumped on it like a dog on a bone as I thought the price was dirt cheap. It was about 12 weeks and a few days to ship. I received a very well made and finished barrel with a nice tight fit into the receiver. It shot well from the first shot to the last time I had it out. Its first trip to a paid match was good enough to get me a first place. Its heading into its 6th season come spring. I've never had the barreled action out of the stock since assembly it just shoots to good to risk it. Never have had a failure to feed, fire or eject.

Good thing they do custom shapes!

They might be able to copy the VQ muzzle-weighted barrel design ..

Similar to this one but with a 1:16 barrel twist.

How about a group buy?!
