Where to find a nice or new 39A

Log in to see fewer ads
I guess I am late to the party, as I just found out that both Marlin was sold to Remington and Remington was recently sold to Ruger, so no longer any new 39A 22 cal lever action rifles.

I wanted to get one for grandson to learn on, and wanted to complement my grandfathers 1892 30-30

Any recommendations on where to look for a newer (Pre 2008) non-remington version. I looked on the classifieds here, but that one just sold. I'd prefer a Marlin over the Winchester 9422 that was also discontinued.

Gunbroker, Guns America, Guns International and other used Gun/Collector gun dealers. They’re out there but doubtful of NIB,

Welcome to Rimfire Central Intex. Besides Gerald's excellent suggestions don't forget to check out the ".22 rifles other" section of our Trading Post. That's where I got one of mine. The only one showing right now already sold but they come up not infrequently.

These plus local gun shops. I found a nice Mountie about 3 years ago on Gunbroker, and bought it, then last year as Covid was breaking out I was in our local shop, actually buying a Sig P365 and noticed two Mounties and a standard 39a on the racks. Went back next week and the standard was gone, but I bought the better of the two Mounties.

They are out there, just fewer being put up for sale.

Plenty of very nice ones out there..But as said they are pricey unless you get lucky and find one off the beaten path..I have several..But the last very nice 1967 Golden I sold on GB brought right at 1000.00, and the guy was thrilled to get it for that..

I bought that one local a couple years back for 650.00..Good deals are out there..You just have to search and be patient..

As to preference, I think the 9422 is a better gun than the Marlin 39. Just not as clunky and heavy.Although I do like the Mounty , and it has the straight stock which i prefer.

But NIB , that’s gonna be pricey, if it were me , Id buy the kid todays 39. A Henry H001Y.

They shoot good and if he likes shooting , then. NIB 39 might be just the ticket.

Marlin was bought by Ruger in the Remington bankruptcy. From the news release I read today, there is a very good chance that by fall Ruger will be bringing out the Marlin lever action rifles, including the 1895 and 39A in their new line up sometime later this year.... might be worth waiting for...

I would not buy anything but a older Marlin 39A..Even if Ruger makes a 39A again..I do not believe they even will..It will have to be a cheapened up version to have any chance of selling..

That goes for all the new Lever Guns Ruger will be making..

I could be wrong, doubtful, maybe Ruger will make the best Lever Guns ever devised for 500.00..But do not hold your breath there.

Buying a Henry for the interim would help with having patience in finding your Marlin 39A or Winchester 9422.

The Marlin 39A is priced as a collector gun and in my opinion the price far exceeds either the utility value or the pride of ownership value. I understand wanting can over ride any logic. The OP has spoken. I have done the same. Not with Marlins. Lucky, I got what I really wanted back when it was possible.

Paying megabucks for any collectable NIB and then taking it out to shoot away 25% of value? What is that?

As long as people are suggesting the Henry. I like to also suggest the Winchester 9422. That was a beautiful gun and one I consider better than either Marlin or Henry. The Winchester 9422 always carried a premium, but; given where the Marlins are right now, the Winchester looks like a viable alternative for an even better lever 22.

Buying a Henry just to have any lever he find find and then upgrading to Marlin? Save the money and buy the high end gun. If the OP gets a 9422 he will be set for life. Or get the Marlin and be happy for just as long.

Edit: I missed where the OP does not want a 9422. Sorry, for that.
