You would think a bomb squad would know that explosives explode, and would move them to an open field before setting them off.
Anyone who thinks that California is communist hasn't a clue what communism actually is.

powdered aluminum mixed with chlorate has an RE factor much higher than one, IIRC. I think it's like 1.8

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Protesters confronted police in front of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Newton Station two days after a bomb squad truck exploded in a South Los Angeles neighborhood during a botched detonation of illegal fireworks seized from a nearby home.

“We have to make it clear: South Central was bombed by the Los Angeles Police Department,” Alfredo Gama, president of the Central Alameda Neighborhood Council, said during the Friday night demonstration. “We want to know, who made that call.”

The protesters demanded to know whether LAPD would have made the same call to detonate homemade fireworks already deemed unstable in a more affluent neighborhood.

“Would they have made that call if we were in Santa Monica,” Gama said.

Martha Sanchez, a marriage and family therapist, is on the South Central Neighborhood Council. She said the blast shook her home while she was in the middle of a therapy session.

“I’m so, so mad. So disgusted,” she said. “And I was screaming in front of my patient, because I was terrorized.”

The residents said they wanted criminal charges filed against LAPD and for 20% of the department’s budget immediately directed to the victims.

“”Our house was destroyed, and there’s some valuable things inside that’s hard to recover,” Jovana Martinez, a victim, said. “It’s going to take a while to get that back.”

So far, her family has been forced to stay at two different evacuations since their home is unlivable, a reality made even more difficult since her brother has autism and her father is awaiting surgery. After the surgery, he will need a permanent place to recover.

“They didn’t ask for this,” one activist said.

Earlier on Friday, 45 agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives descended on the neighborhood to process the roughly three-block debris field. LAPD asked the public to be patient as the investigation continued.

“The criminals, as they call them, were keeping it safer than they were,” Gama said.

It would seem that the containment vehicle that could stand a blast of 16 1/2 pounds of explosives was loaded with "more than 42 pounds" of explosives. Somebody made an oppsy.

I blame the whole LAPD mishap on math. It's math's fault - too much math. Those guys are trained in explosives ...not math.

But it was a really big bang and they caught it on video for the whole world to see.

I blame it on the push made to go to the metric system. They read pounds on the documentation but were thinking Kilos. 16.5 Kilos was about what was loaded.

As far as what would have happened if it had gone off in the garage, it would have been much better since it would not have acted as a containment to enhance the overall blast performance of the reaction. It may have sent debris everywhere but the shock wave would have been much smaller.

As for the plastic garbage cans, they must be really tough and flexible to have been that close and not been crushed.

Except for 1 little detail; there was 5,000# total of fireworks seized hence a much bigger kaboom!

32,000 pounds counting what he had tarped up in the back yard Al. He was trying to corner the market for sure! https://www.cnn.com/2021/07/19/us/fi...rnd/index.html

"Human Error" is likely to be the final determination. One things for sure, the LAPD did a BANGup job of it

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

If you look at the numbers and do a little math you can almost guess what the LAPD's bomb squad's thought process was. So 16.5# the safe maximum times 3 equals 49.5 pounds. 42+ pounds the amount they say was in it divided by three equals 14+ pounds. So the bomb squad arrives on the scene and takes in this fellows back yard full of fire works. They figure it's going to be a long day. The squad has a discussion on how they want to proceed. Someone mentions that the maximum is 16.5 pounds. Then someone else points out there in a residential neighborhood so maybe earing on the safe side is a good idea. Another bomb squad member says 14 pounds is a good number and everyone agrees that this will give them two safety allowances. So 14 pounds plus or minus a couple of ounces is considered a disposable load. How you get from 14 pounds to 42 pounds becomes the question.
