Winchester 52 Questions

Log in to see fewer ads
I have a Winchester 52, serial number 75xxxB so I am guessing it is a Model 52d. It does have the Heavy barrel 1 inch at the receiver, but I am not sure about the stock, especially the butt plate. I think it is an addition that came later in life. It does have some pitting on the barrel which should be in one of the pictures. I would like to get some information on the stock and an approximate value. Thankyou for any information. Henry

Trying to figure out sending the pictures

The B at the end of the serial number indicates that it is a B model.

No pics to see.

I believe the buttplate was made by "Benny" who was located in Ohio. The same person who created and sold the Benny action. I have one on a 52B that I purchased 8-9 years ago. I have used it and it works fine.

I should have added that "Benny" was Benny Sunderhaus who lived in Eastern, OH. He produced the Benny action which was a peer with the Morgan and other low production custom actions of the late 1940s - 1960s.

Looks like a standard barrel to me. With the butt plate and finish issues plus the added front sight block shes a shooter and not a collector. If this were out on the table at a match I would expect to see a price tag of $600.

It fits the dimensions for heavy barrel 1 inch in front of receiver and .875 at the muzzle. That is why I think it it is a heavy barrel but my knowledge of Winchester 52's is very limited.

Bill, All the Benny buttplates I have seen and owned had a very unique lever cam system to lock the adjustments on dovetail. Also, if made by Benny, it should be stamped as such. Everything he made that I'm aware of was marked with his name, that includes rifles, buttplates, handstops etc. All were very high quality. Some were stamped on the flat face surface of between the 2 halves by the dovetail.

Agreed, it looks smaller to me in the photo. Price would be the same in my opinion.

Thank you to everyone who answered. I picked this rifle up to shoot small bore in 1988 shot a year and the league dissolved and it has been a safe queen since. I am thinking of moving it along to someone who would use it but didn't know what a fair starting price would be.
