As for now refer to 50 Yard Vintage and Unlimited Iron Sight Matches for Jan. 2020 for rules. Still trying to figure out how to get this all together.

The scoring format looks fine. Now, if you could just do something about the weather......

Tucson

Rem Mdl 37, Ed Magnusen, Tucson
Cowan front, protektor rear, Eley Match
Globe front with plastic insert, PNW rear sight
Wind 0 to 7 mph from 1000, 38 degrees, bright sun
1st target: 200-12x, 50-3x, 50-2x, 50-4x, 50-3x
2nd target: 200-9x, 50-2x, 50-4x, 50-1x, 50-2x

Tucson gang stayed at home, all by my self at range. Cold but low wind and very sunny. My 37 (manufacture date 1946) is my most consistent shooter.

Lon Hale
February 6,2020 United Sportsman Club, Iron Mountain, MI
Vintage H&R M12 International Rear w/ Merit Olympic front
Ammo Fiocchi TT Sport
50-3x,50-3x,50-4x,50-2x=200-12x Temperature 24 degrees wind quartering head at 8-10, sunny and cold. First time testing this Italian ammo and pretty impressed for a high velocity round. Very consistent crack and rifle vibrations. Had 13 clicks elevation change from sv stuff. Could use a little global warming so shoot the hotter rounds. A little mirage from the infrared heater for unthawing frozen fingers may have messed with sight picture on a few shots.

Rob Fates, Alamo CA
Vintage 195-4X
Mossberg 144LSB, Lyman 157RS rear and Lyman 17A front sights
Federal 711B ammunition
48-1X, 48-1X, 48-0X, 50-2X
Protektor front and rear bags

Bright sun, 60 degrees, light wind

I discovered that if I move my head back on the stock, reducing the sight picture through the rear sight aperture that it is easier to keep the sight picture concentric and reduce group size. Fascinating what one learns along the journey...I want this rifle to perform well with Federal 711B ammo, hoping that sheer willpower will overcome the obstacles of an entry-level rifle, inexpensive ammo and advancing age.

I suspected inconsistent ignition due to past failures to fire. So, I dismantled the bolt and cleaned out old oil and grease deposits from the firing pin and the channel in which it slides. Seems to have more repeatable movement.

The Lyman rear sight still seems to be a problem. When I make any windage adjustment I also get an elevation change, usually up. The windage arm of the sight seems to flex in its channel.

Rob,
I have a couple of the old Lyman 57’s that are quite loose myself. May have to tinker with them a little. One on a Mossberg L43 that would be a good candidate for sure. Perhaps brass shim stock in a .001 thickness or careful staking is in order. The other is on a Winchester 69 Match which may be to valuable to mess with.

I had this issue on a Remington 511 and finally had it D&T'd for a Redfield sight base and used a Redfield 75 rear sight, which is much stiffer. I'm not going to bother with the Mossberg though - just live with the Lyman and outwit it...

200/11X Jacques Rifkind
Los Angeles (ASR)
BSA Intl. Mark III, PH front and rear sights; Lapua Center-X
Cowan front; Protektor rear
50/2X, 50/2X, 50/4X, 50/3z
Second target today was 198/16x. I was on the way to a record (for me) score, but a wind must have come up just as I moved to the 2nd bull and it pushed first two shots into the 9 ring. Didn’t feel it at the firing line, and there were no flags out, and no grass tall enough to read.
