Barrel Length Model 1408 ED Super

Hello Folks

I am following an auction for a nice looking 1408 ED Super. I believe this was a moving target model from the late 1970's.

The vendor states it has a barrel length of 440 mm (17.3") with a extension tube of 220 mm (8.5"). I can see from an original manual I downloaded that this model did indeed come with a "short barrel and extension tube" however the length isn't given (that I can see).

I'm keen to establish if this barrel length is factory original.

The serial number is 1215XX with no "x" after it - is it possible to tell if this a 1400 action or 1600??

Thanks
Foster

Foster,

The serial number indicates it's a 1400, probably made around 1974-75.

17in does seem short. Have you checked that the seller is measuring from muzzle to chamber? Measuring to the receiver only will always make the barrel appear shorter than factory spec.

My 1408 ED S barrel length from receiver to end of rifling is closer to 18". The barrel weights on mine come out to 4.5".

My serial number is also 1215xx and the barrel is stamped 74, indicating 1974 manufacture.

There it is in rough comparison with three, 26-27" barrels.

And a 1987 offering with a combined barrel length of 32.5"
