I have a Lothar Walther and a Lilja and they both shoot about the same in HM2 and have the same in HMR and the Lothar Walther out shoots the Lilja with that being said they both shoot outstanding.

Yeah I was just looking at the Lothar Walther website.

Not as familiar with Lilja but I see they are crazy expensive! Usually that means good, but I don't know that I need that good.

Wow - nice

Is it the match barrel with the inset crown?

I asked for a quote

Where did you get it?

Direct from LW. Not an inset crown like KIDD but a beutiful crown it is.

So which crown do you like better? The LW?

They sent me a quote and a way to order, and I'm happy to see that they now offer a $16 thread cap too. However, I didn't order just yet.

KIDD makes great stuff for the 10/22 but when I asked them about this their reply was "Thank you for your interest in our products! We do not have any immediate plans to produce a barrel for that type of rifle.".

WhistlePig looks like they offer barrels too but I'm less familiar with the quality of their barrels. Currently if I feel compelled to get one I'd probably get the LW drop in offering.

On a threaded barrel I prefer the set back that KIDD does. To me it makes a better barrel but on that, it's just how I "feel". No proof as my other barrels are good and the LW is exceptional.

That's good to know - thanks!

They seem to focus only on 10/22's now and are out of the business of making barrels for CZ's so I'll keep this in mind if I upgrade my 10/22 barrel at some point.

Thanks,
Ron

Do you think that an after-market match quality 17HM2 barrel is worth buying when there hasn't been any match quality ammo available since Eley discontinued it?

Eley is better than the new stuff but was never "Match" grade. Just tends to be better than new stuff.

Did you use the Eley for the awesome group above?

I finally got some of the Hornady 17gr VMAX which seems to be the best you can get for 17HMR from what I can tell (correct me if I'm wrong), so that's what I'll plan to test with.

I ended up taking the easy / cheap route and got the CZ 17 HMR barrel. That said, I wasn't impressed when I got it and saw the 3 shot group sheet they included with it:

0.75 inches at 50m is a 1.31 MOA group - not really what I'm getting 17 HMR for as I can do way better than that with 22LR even through my 1983 Ruger with its original barrel using Federal Range Pack ammo (significantly better with good ammo)

I'm going to say it likely needs a heck of a cleaning. I'm also a believer in the breakin process. Use the one that makes you feel good. Also the crown is very important. Check with the Q-Tip technique. Mounting the Barrel to get the least headspace is also important. Had to loosen my mag housing to get mine fit tight.

It's better you research the ideas I've mentioned on your own. You"ll learn allot and have earned it, so to say. Good luck and it'll turn out fine I'm sure.
