So this is actually the roughest Spiegel I've ever bought, but it appears to be all there, insofar as what was there originally. It's a Model W42S. I've never actually seen one before, and it doesn't pull up any tangible results if you search W42S in the Mossberg section here on the forum. It has a dovetail post front sight (maybe not original), the No. 2 rear barrel sight, both swivels, and the buttplate with the magazine door. The D&T holes for the No. 7 mounts have screw fillers as well as the D&T holes for the #6 side mount and the rear peep sight - all have filler plugs that look original. It has a leather 1" military-style sling, and it has the bolt cover plate on the bolt. The only thing missing was a magazine, and I just happen to have picked one of those up recently for a good price. Somebody has started sanding on the barrel across the roll marks, but they are still plenty sharp. I'll likely need to reblue it. The bore is shiny and clean. Pictures shortly.

By the way, I used to have pdf copies of all the Spiegel model numbers, years, and production numbers, which I had gotten off the site. I can't find them either on my computer or on the site anymore. Anybody else still have those?

There was a W42B, but never heard of a W42S. Is it possibly a light stamping? Would like to see pictures if possible, doesn't matter what it looks like. You know us, we like pictures.

The lettering is pretty sharp on it.

Actually it isn't drilled for the side mount scope - just the no. 7.

Yep no questioning the stamp, it is an S. Also the front sight is a mossberg sight, just missing the hood. Commonly seen on the 26 and 44US trainer, probably many others, but those are the two that popped in my head.

The BS I just got is not setup for a side mound either.

I also went back and looked, it does show it made in 1940

Still nice to add for show and tell. Thanks for the pictures. I have never seen a W42S or even a #7 scope but then I sometimes find things I didn't know I would ever see.

My B42T is in about the same condition. I left it as is. Nothing wrong with a beater, especially if it an oddball model.

There's not too many that are more oddball than this one. I think it's a keeper.

"There's not too many that are more oddball than this one."
Does anyone else think it seems odd that it has a Master Action bolt yet has a dust cover?
Just kinda seems strange to me......

No not really strange, itís pretty much a late model 42A/42B combination due to the stock used. Itís in the right time frame for the dust cover, my 42BS started in 1939 and has one.

I have a WWF version of the 42, which was actually the first rifle my son ever bought, the day he turned 18. It has been reblued and is in like new condition, including the bolt - LOL! It has the bolt cover too. Since I have such a "pristine" other example of the model, I'll leave this one as-found.

I was a little bit disappointed today. I had a Numrich order going, so I added a front sight hood for the W42S to my order. It arrived today, but the gap in the hood is too wide to provide any kind of snug fit on the sight post. It's the wrong one. The search goes on.

Not sure what hood you got from GPC, but this is the one you need for it. This is from Aperturesnmore, you may be able to order directly from him.

A real shame about the sandpaper, judicious use of 4 aught steel wool and Rem-Oil would've brought it back nicely.
