Has anyone used this action for a custom build? Any experience with this model? I'm looking for an action to build a custom rifle on.

If you search the Remington subforum here I think you’ll find posts by at least one member who’s built some beautiful rifles around the 781 action.

The 580 single shot was a cheap rifle that is not so cheap any more due to guys like Dan Olsen and Calhoun converting them to small center fires. Some convert them to 17 AH and other small cased wild cat cartridges. With it being a rear lug action even making a new front portion of the bolt is not very hard for a machinist with the outstanding work that I have seen members here can do. I know this thread was on the 581 but this shows how strong these little actions are.

I have three 581-based builds -- one with a Hart SS Match barrel, the second with a Benchmark CM sporter 3-groove barrel, and the third with a new Anschutz 1712 take-off barrel bought from ANA. Makes a great rifle!

Doug,
What chamber did you use in yours?

The 581 action is a great action to have a custom build on. Probably no better one out there to make a custom build on. I have built one on a 581 action. But I have had several 580, 581, 582's and they are well made guns.

Well, the Hart-barreled build I bought from a friend and I have no idea of which chamber reamer might have been used. The Anschutz 1712 barrel has the standard Anschutz chamber. And I have contacted the builder of the Benchmark-barreled build to find out what chamber reamer he might have used. Standby...

Evelio McDonald just put a new Anschutz 1712 Silhouette take off barrel on my 541 S, cut off the tenon on the new barrel, rechambered it.

His reasoning was, "Since you are going to be using Lapua ammo. I would use a Neviou reamer."

Thanks DCF. I need to get off my lazy butt and finish it.........do the checkering in other words.

It was a stock made by Bishop Stock Co. when they were in business. I've had it for sometime now.

K22, I just heard back from the 'smith who did my 581 build with the Benchmark barrel, and he said while he couldn't find his notes, he said he was almost certain he used a Calfee .2255 2 degree leade reamer. I can tell you it shoots very well, and likes Center-X especially.

Thanks Doug.
Does it extract the rounds easy or are they a bit tight?

I have a D52 chamber in mine and fired cases extract slightly hard. I'm thinking I should have used a longer and heavier bolt handle.
After I clean the chamber they extract fine for about 15 rounds then they tighten up again.
This is with RWS, SK, Eley, ect.
The barrel on mine is a 541T that Brian Voelker selected for me.
