Remington 30.40?

Going through my FIL's firearms and trying to identify this rifle. Some kind of vintage Remington bolt action rifle.. It says 30.40? I've never heard of that before but that's not saying much LOL

The left side of the receiver near the bolt says:
REMINGTON ARMS CO. | LION, N.Y.U.S.A F 76394

Further below, still left side, but along the side of the receiver:
PATENTED AUG.26th 1884. SEP'T 9TH 1884. MARCH 17TH 1885. JAN.18TH 1887

Underside of the barrel, near the forearm says:
30.40

Right side of the barrel in the corner where it meets the receiver has one marking, either an H or an M.

Well, you are in the Remington subforum, but that's definitely not a rimfire.

That might be a Remington Lee bolt action chambered for .30-40 Krag. There seem to extra screws on the side.

Looks like a Remington - Lee 1899 Sporting rifle. Caliber 30-40 Kraig Should have a magazine that is similar to Lee enfield rifles . Cool old rifle

You have an interesting piece of Remington history. A Remington built Mosin Nagant.

Not the right action or mag well to be a mosin. The 30-40 krag sporter I think is spot on

Nope, it's not a Mosin-Nagant, there's no magazine hanging down in front of the guard.

It's a Remington-Lee, the trigger guard looks exactly like the Lee-Enfield's, and the trigger is hinged, just like them. That action served as the basis for the Lee-Enfield as built by the English makers.
