Help with Model 68

Log in to see fewer ads
Hi everybody. I recently came into possession of a Winchester Model 68. It looks like it works, and I'm planning on fixing it up a little for my boy when he's a little older. Can someone point me at the manual for this? Also, I'm probably going to need to replace the buttplate, and put the front sight hood back on. Is there some place that specializes these or is Numerich the go-to?

Don't be surprised if the "manual" is a single piece of heavy paper/single sheet. I will check my source of information.

No objections to that. What about the sight hood? Oh, also, how do you adjust the rear sight?

You might want to search for Winchester No. 96A Peep sight or possibly a Lyman No. 55W and Lyman 57ES

You will find several butt plates on E bay also the sight hood it might take a while for just the hood to pop up but they do show up. Adjusting the rear sight is fairly straight forward. The long part pointing at the front sight moves it left or right. The small wheel moves it up and down.
Have a great day

There really isn't much to working on the 68. The old manuals that came with the gun gave some rudimentary take down instructions. But there isn't much more to it.

Here's a more complete manual:

These guys also carry some 67 and 68 parts, which are almost always interchangeable.

Cool thanks. It seems like the rear sight doesn't want to adjust...any suggestions?

Remember also, you just can't buy any old buttplate. If it's not the one that came originally on THAT gun it will have to be reshaped.

A good penetrating oil on the rear of the sight and keep it damp for a few days. I wouldn't recommend using any force on it. if it doesn't loosen up you might have to remove it and put it in a small container of oil until it comes loose. Kroil is what I like best.
Good Luck

OK. Got my parts in. You're right, the buttplate needs fitting. Any advise on how to do that?

Mount buttplate. Scribe line on rear of buttplate. Remove and file and light sand to scribed line. Polish edge with fine rubbing compound.
