17 HMR Thoughts

Been tossing around the Idea of getting a 17 HMR, Will be used for hunting small game.

Most of my guns are more "tactical" for shooting in competitions and stuff like that

Help me pick out a Gun-Scope-Rings ect please.

I want to keep the nice wood that most CZ's come with and keep it looking more of a traditional hunting rifle look.

Pictures of yours and info would be great

Thanks for any and all help

Not a CZ

But a Ruger I like showing it off

Burris 3x9 scope.Very ,very accurate.Devastating on prairie dogs and long range rabbits. The 20 gr bullets might be better for small game at closer distances.

Small varmints, ok

Small game, you may want to pick another more suitable cartridge.

Just an FYI, Guns Unlimited in Omaha,NE has a 453 Varmint in .17HMR with a very nice stock. They also have a 452 American of the same caliber but it's left handed. I don't recall the prices as I'm not in the market for a .17.

I think a 455 American or Varmint in 17hmr would be great. For optics with that rifle, a Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32AO or a Weaver V-16 would be fine scopes to get all the "reach" out of that speedy round.

My vote is for a 455 American with a Redfield Revenge 6-18x44 FinePlex. It is my new favorite scope. I have 2 and am thinking of hoarding them.

Mine is a Varmint, but if I had it to do over again, I would go with the American.

My vote is also for the 455 American.

I want to say right here, I just love the 17HMR!
Without the inconvenience (?) of hand loading... (Hey, I do enough of it already) I get a buzz from head-shooting rabbits at 100-120 yds all day with a sub-minute performer in a factory configuration.
I suspect most of the knocking comes from people who don't have experience with the cartridge anyway.
As for the old chestnut about being hard to clean, and copper fouling... That sure isn't my experience.
Q-tip cotton buds on a female rod do a good job on the barrel if you can't be bothered with patches.

My 17hmr is in the CZ Trainer model. An excellent rifle that will shoot nickle size groups at 100 yds all day long. It prefers the 20 grn loadings over the 17 grn.

Rule-303 and stvnscott can you tell me why you like the American over the Varmint? I already have an American and like it but it is set up for silhouette shooting so I need a second CZ! I was considering the 455 Varmint for something different. It will used for hunting and plinking. I know I would be happy with another American but it is hard not to get something different. Thanks for any help/perspective.
