Gustloffwerk - Geco? - .22 Sporting Rifle

Log in to see fewer ads
Not a Mauser, but I didn't see a forum any closer in topic material.

Picked up a Gustloffwerk .22 rifle.
Very similar in appearance to the Geco Model 28, except it has a Mauser type flag safety on the rear of the bolt.

Pictures are terrible, but it is currently raining so no good light for pics. Will get some better ones when I can.

Can anyone identify this specific rifle? Made by Geco?

Any help appreciated.

I guess that it is a Gustloff 317K.
A picture of the action with the bolt and the barrel marking will, for sure, help.

Will get additional pics.
May be a day or three. Forgot that my daughter comes home from college today for the holiday.

A quick search of "Gustloff 317K" images makes be believe your suggestion is correct.

Thank you.

Just took mine out of the safe.
Your is definetely a 317K or similar to.
Let's call these rifle "Model 317". The first model was made by a company named Simson located in a town called Suhl. The Nazi parti (after having taken the lead in Germany) merged Simson with BSW (Berliner Sühler Waffen). BSW has later been renamed Gustloff.
Your is a very late produced exemplary.

Geco was mostly a distributor and ammunition manufacturer after WWII, here is the company history:

"Very late"?

Late 30's?
Late war?

Have never owned one before, so I have no information of the production time span.

I do not believe the bolt is original to this rifle.
Pulled metal from stock and the trigger has the number "95" on it.
As you can see, the bolt has number "61"

The blue is rather "glossy". Original?

The stock figure is amazing for such .22 rifle. Actually for any rifle.

Produced during war (Eagle N proof mark - N means Nitro for the powder)
I do not know why neither the Gustloff logo nor the Modell 317K are not stampled on your action. But I know that the production quality has decreased along war (at the end, Gustloff production was in Buchenwald with a very bad quality)
On the first producted examplaries, the buttplate was BSW marked and the bolt in the white. I guess that your's bolt has been later blued.
I will later have a look in my documentation and then tell you more.

Thank you Eurydice.

Haven't a clue why mine is (un)marked differently but I do appreciate your help in identifying it.

I’d say yours is probably late war due to the lack of receiver markings. Gustloff took over the BSW production line in the early 40s. These model 317 rifles are real gems.
