OPEN OK, lets get this thing going. Key points of interest are the barrel dimensions, magazine type and sights. I will post what's already here. If you don't know what you have, just take a picture and we'll figure it out.

Update for 0182

0182, Birch, Redfield 68, 75 rcvr, barrel 27 1/4, 13/16 diam no taper, OEM 3235 7rd mag LR only, rifle assembled from parts

As far as suggestions, I think we may want to distinguish between rifles found fully assembled and those built from parts. Those acquired fully assembled from CMP/DCM or other reputable sources may provide greater insight into original configurations than rifles built up from parts, mags bought separately.

For mags, perhaps we could specify round capacity, OEM or aftermarket, Mossberg model no if known and whether acquired with rifle or bought separately.

Do we anticipate any bolt handle variations? Since the volumes were low and the rifles were built for a contract, I would expect less variation in all respects than with other rifles.

Regards,

Bruce

Rifles found fully assembled may or not be as issued. Those sold by CMP were sold as received so any number of modifications may be present. The magazines could have also been changed along the way. I don't think there would be any bolt mods as these were target rifles. Magazine capacity may be a good notation. Regards, Rick.

I talked to Cheryl today and she is interested in our 144 US Property survey. She said there were 2 magazines that were issued with these.....the R498 and 632, both 7 round magazines, one hole and are the same except one has the 22 short screw.. The 10 shot magazines many of us have are OEM and contracted back in 1992 by Havlins'. Pics of the magazines are on page 276 of Havlins' book. Regards, Rick.

Although the rifles may have been originally produced with the R498/R632 mags, I have seen CMP auction pics of a complete 144US with mag and the mag pictured is a 3235 mag. It is possible that the 3235 mags were supplied to the gov't as part of a parts contract.

I still have not seen conclusive data showing when the contracts for these rifles were let and fulfilled. In my opinion the 144US rifles have a few features that are also seen on the later 144LSB rifles. I am also of the opinion that some of the 144US features were developed to meet the cost constraints of the gov't contract and then were later introduced as cost saving measures on the LSB

US1362. This bbl/action came in a complete rifle from a gent in New Hampster but I assume it was assembled from parts. I took it out of the stock it came in (the stock was modified with a Freeland rail inletted into the stock) and installed it in another that I had. The barrel is 27-1/4" long but unlike the others listed it measures .865 at the muzzle and tapers the entire length up to .914 at the action. It is wearing the Redfield 68 and 75 sights and has a birch stock.

I have two additional 144US partials that I am working on and I will list them as they are finished.

This is a photo of 144US1362

All three of my 144US rifles taper from the muzzle(.865) to the action juncture(.920). Everyone needs to update their measurements and confirm they taper or are straight. Regards, Rick.

I just picked mine up a couple of weeks ago from a man who claims he bought it from the CMP about 20 years ago.

0278 Birch?, Lyman 57MS, Lyman 17A, .865 to .920, no hole mag.

What is this stamp on the barrel? It's about an inch in front of the serial #.

Here is the serial number and other stamping.

I will post photos of the stock when I can get outside in better light to confirm the stock material.

Hello Txdude. Interesting sight combination and an early SN. The circle P is a military acceptance proof mark found on all 144US rifles. A picture of the whole rifle appreciated. Regards, Rick.
