I would crank the windage turret back and forth through its entire range several times and then center it before shooting again also.

As the rifle is new to you, if not done already, check that all the action screws are properly secured. These rifles tend to do best somewhere btwn 15-24 in/lbs torque. Not much more. I would think it would likely be very loose though, if it were a loose screw causing that much stringing. A pressure point favoring one side of the bbl can exacerbate this too. If none of the aforementioned checks reveal the cause, can you remount that scope on a different known good shooting rifle? Testing it on a different rifle will help isolate it to rifle or scope. Or mount a known good scope on this rifle and try out for same reasons. I hear 17 hmr ammo can be somewhat unreliable too from lot-to-lot.

Good advice to spread the lube of the erector innards within, that I keep forgetting with new scopes.
