tried a couple new things

I had an order for a knife and wanted to try something new. I used for the first time a dyed burl. I used a greenish, stabilized box elder burl from Gallery Hardwoods. The dyed burls are kinda cool. I may use more in the future. I e-mailed the customer a pic of the scales but I never heard back from him before it was time to put the handle on. Hope he likes green. I also tried a new file work pattern.

The knife is 3/16" O1 tool steel, 8 3/4" OAL, with brass bolster and pins.

Green is not my favorite but I sure like what you did with it! Beautiful knife.

Gary that knife is ,well, like all of yours! The fit and finish just gets better and better, true art. I can't believe the grain pattern in the burl. I really enjoy seeing your work, it's definitely a labor of love from someone who thoroughly enjoys making knives, and marrying different materials to complete many beautiful pieces. Hey, any chance we can get some of that burl dyed candy apple red?

Thanks for all the kind words. I like the way the knife turned out. The buyer, not so much. They wanted something more traditional. That's ok. We all have different tastes and I am going to make him another knife with a dark brown burl, probably maple. Love that stuff.

I have seen some red box elder burl but it was spotty. It looked as if the dye didn't want to penetrate all the wood. I like the green because it was more consistant in color than the reds.

I think the green looks fantastic against the brass. Once again your filework is amazing. What a great pice of work.

That is absolutely gorgeous. If the customer really doesn't like it, shoot me a pm with a price. I have a couple of bucks burning a hole in my pocket and might just pick it up.

Thanks guys. The knife did sell. I knew someone would like green but I'm going to stick with more traditional colors unless requested. The original customer now has to wait longer for a knife because I wanted to try something a little different.
