Longest/Closest Kills?
Just curious what others longest and closest game kills have been.
My longest was an antelope at 325 yds with my 30.06.
My closest was an elk at 5 paces with my .50 black powder.
The longest I have personally witnessed was an elk at 600 yds with a .300 win-mag.
I try to keep my shots close for clean and ethical kills. I try to limit my shots to 250 yds with the '06, and under 40 yds with the ML. Depending on the situation, I may just pass on a shot or I may try to sneek closer. YMMV.

My longest shot on a big game animal was a whitetail deer- 410 yards with my Weatherby Mark V Stainless in 7MM Weatherby Magnum.
My closest shot was also a whitetail deer- 20 FEET with my Weatherby Mark V Stainless Lightweight in 240 Weatherby Magnum.
Both required only one shot.

My longest was with a 6.5mm SE at a 4x5 mule deer at a lasered distance of 367 yards. I took that shot only because when he stood up after 20 minutes of waiting with thumping heart he looked like he was going to move in the wrong direction --> further away rather than closer. Fortunately the shot broke his shoulder and he piled up about 20 yards from where he was shot after sliding and stumbling down a steep slope.
Nearest was a javelina at about 10 yards when she flew out of the brush I had been creeping up on.

I got all geared up... equipment-wise and mentally... for those long cross-canyon shots for my first elk hunt. DRT there with a shot to the base of the neck at 75 yards. Next year it was about 150 yards. Year after that it was about 100 yards. In between the shots I was getting as close as 50 yards to elk I didn't have a tag for. Lots of fun.

I always creep as close as I can. Not hard with javelina but a real challenge with deer. I sight in for MPBR and (normally) limit my shots to the MPBR of the cartridge I'm using so I don't have to fuss with holdover.

When I was a kid I shot a field mouse at about 6 feet, Marlin single-shot .22 with #12 rat shot. I must have stared at that hole for two hours before he popped out.

Closest was a whitetail deer directly under me...bow kill. I reckon that was 0 yards?
Longest isn't very long because I'm a very conservative shot, even with a rifle. I've taken a couple of squirrels at 80 yards (rimfire) and a whitetail (.308) at 125 or so. I've never even attempted a shot past 125.

Longest, 415 yards on coyote. Longest on deer was 335 and normally would not have taken a shot at that distance with my Savage striker in .308 but my hunting partner had already placed a bad shot into it wounding it, I amazed us both by dropping it with one shot.
Shortest, would be deer or squirrels directly under my tree stand or probably the raccoon that tried to climb into the stand with me

Farthest was deer at between 150 & 190 yards: actually 5 deer taken at those ranges. Rifles were a .257 R and a .350 Rem mag.
Closest was a deer at about 8 feet with a Ruger SBH .44 mag.

I shot 4 deer in under 5 minutes 2 seasons ago. The closest was 307 yards and the farthest was just a hair under 390 yards. Gun was a CZ550 in 30-06 topped by a Meopta R2 with 165 grain handloads. However, I have shot 2 deer on two different days at close to 450 yards way back when I lived in peanut field country. We didn't have laser rangefinders back then, so we estimated by measuring on a topo map.
Closest shot was about 10 feet. Had a fat buck walk under my stand and started munching on white oak acorns. I leaned over and shot straight down between the front shoulders.
Where I hunt now, is very hilly terrain with lots of funnels, so unless I am hunting on the pipeline right-of-way where I shot the 4 mentioned above, the distances are typically less than 50 yards. On the coastal plain where they grow soybeans and peanuts, 250+ yard shots are not uncommon at all.

I held 2-3'H when I shot a ruffed grouse @ 96yds with a 12ga., #6 shot, high brass, 2 yrs ago. I about soiled myself when it fell over. I put up a white target and lasered it 4-5 times to measure the distance.
Presumably the same bird, had been seen multiple times by my bud or I on the end of a thick 2 track and would run or fly into said thick stuff not offering a shot if either of us tried to get closer, hence the hail mary shot.
Closest snowshoe hare for me was about 3'. Bud grabbed one when he first saw its ears sticking up on the other side of a log. Caught it alive and kept it in a bucket to show his young boys what they sound like when hurt or scared before the frying pan at camp. Pretty cool.

I can not remember the longest shot but I do remember a wolf at 250 yds that sticks in my head,I usually shoot most game from 100 - 200 yds. But I do remember very vividly a grizzly bear at 10 yds that I will never ever forget, still makes me shudder. Steve!

My
longest was a coyote at 387 yards - Vortex laser measured. Ruger #1 in a .22-250 Ackley Improved. Shortest, ground hog coming at me at 2 yards taken with a .222 Remington. I just pointed the barrel at him!
