Dreams of getting to bigger forests.
Years ago I could limit out on squirrels in a half day hunt. Wasn't unusual to kick out two or three rabbits out as well. I don't know how old you are but back in the 70's and 80's there was quite a bit of small game in South Central Pa. I think the hawk population has taken it's toll plus the squirrels are reluctant to make much movement once the leaves fall off the trees. Late season in Pa. is tough. In the late season I only sit the last hour. The rest of the time I am moving trying to find some moving in the trees. Late it seems to be feast or famine, when you see one you often see several together chasing each other. I too have gone out and had to turn down the only shot or two I had so I have started hunting with a PCP tuned to about 20 FPE with a 14.7 grain pellet. At 275 yards it is totally out of steam and will only go about 150 yards when shot straight up into the air. The air rifle cuts down on my effective range but safety is paramount to me.

Profsrgary, in the 80s I would have been hunting CT woods. Plenty to hunt back then, and the population density was about the same where I hunt now in SE PA, so I'm used to having to carefully select shots. All the squirrels seem to have discovered that life is grand in the crowded burbs.

I've been fortunate to find several farmers with woods that allow me to hunt. But, a couple of years ago business took me out to Reading. So I thought I'd check out game land 43 by French Creek for sign. I was encouraged as I approached 43 since I could see plenty of nests in the surrounding canopy. However, as soon as I entered the the game land boarder the nest's in the canopy vanished. I could actually see several on one side of the boarder and none on the other. Smart buggers.

I know what you mean by the hawks. Red Tails are as common as the turkey vultures around here.

Sad to say...it is way too easy to 'shoot out' a squirrel woods.

Are you speaking only of tree squirrels....as in the edible kind? Or pocket gophers (ground squirrels)?

There are several places of the later that offer UNLIMITED kills per day...unless someone reclassifies the critters as "endangered". BTW, they always were endangered when I showed up.

In all of the 29 years that I've lived in Nebraska, I have run into 3 other squirrel hunters on public land and 0 on private land, and I live in the Omaha metro area.

The limit here is 5 day with possession limit of 10. I only still hunt under good mast trees and will sit in one spot till I get what I need. I have killed a limit several times in years past, but since the reintroduction of coyotes and bobcats, I usually only take 3 or 4 for a good meal with gravy. This way I have a good excuse to get out into nature and enjoy all the things it has for one to see, hear, and smell. Coyotes have put a big dent into the squirrels around here, and I can only eat so many in a meal. By doing hunting this way, I get alot of insight as where to hunt for other game when the season opens for them

Profsrgary, i live in south central pa. Myself, and i can tell you that there is not near the amount of squirrels there used to be.when i was young everyone hunted squirrels, it sounded like the first day of deer season on the squirrel opener. Nowadays i can't remember the last time i even heard a shot during squirrel season around here.so there's alot less hunters and also a lot less squirrels, that doesn't seem logical now does it.
i think the expanding fisher population is really driving the squirrel numbers down, at least around here. The game commission says that the main food source for the fisher is grey squirrels. I was quite skeptical of their ability to chase down and catch a grey squirrel until i witnessed it myself while i was deer hunting. I honestly don't think that I could've shot that fisher with a shotgun that's how quick he was! I never saw anything like it, and probably never will again, it was just amazing to watch. I'm glad they're not maneaters I'd look like i was run thru a cheese grater before i could even get my gun up! Lol
there never used to be any fisher in perry co. And if someone would have told me that we had them in perry co. I would have called them a liar! Since then my son and i both have them on our trail cameras.

I get my limit almost every time I go squirrel hunting.
Which isnt all that often.
2 squirrels is my limit.
I don't ever take more than I need, at that time. Whenever that time is.
I like to leave a few alive for the next guy who might need 2. And so as not to decimate a population and future populations, for bragging rights.
That's part of the problem with 7.5 billion humans and 2 million greenhorn squirrel hunters who know how to pull a trigger who would get eaten by a bear the first time they had to spend the night in a cave, in a survival situation. Just imagine what might happen if they could shoot back.
Honor your prey ladies.

50 years ago there were nearby extensive hardwood forests where I easily shot the limit hunting with a shotgun. These hardwoods have all been cut and replanted in plantation pines. Back then squirrels where common and deer were hard to hunt. Now when I deer hunt I may see 20-30 deer in a food plot. Public land hardwoods are heavily hunted and the squirrels are very wary and difficult to hunt. Usually 4-5 is an average and I may get a limit of 8 once a year with a 22 or
17HM2.

Most I've brought home is 11 out of a Florida limit of 12.
Most outings only produce 3-5.
