Gold medal match 22lr

Have a Sig Trailside that I need some standard velocity ammo for. Federal Automatch and the regular standard velocity blue box federal is always pretty readily available. CCI SV is hit or miss around me from what I've found.

I was at Cabelas today and they had some Federal Gold Medal 22lr standard velocity, and high velocity. Was 4.99 a box.

Was tempted to buy some, but havent heard much about it. Is this ammo any good?

Thanks

My mistake, it was "Gold Medal Target, Standard Velocity"

I have some Gold Metal Target also known as 711 that I bought several years ago and it is good ammo but not top notch target. I have used it in my rifles but have not shot any in pistol, it shoots with cci sv and some of the Aguila sv but I don’t think it is worth that price.
Also can’t say it is same as what I have from back when.

I have tested boxes of 50 from two lots of Federal Gold Medal Premium Target (Load #711B, standard velocity) through my three CZ455 rifles of varying length with the following results:

Extreme Spread varied from 50~90 fps
Standard deviation 13~15 fps
Mean velocity: 1,030~1,120 fps

I have also tested two lots of Federal Gold Medal Premium HV Match (Load #719, high velocity) through those rifles with the following results:

Extreme Spread varied from 50~70 fps
Standard deviation 11~13 fps
Mean velocity: 1,150~1,250 fps

I have also tested one lot of Federal Premium Gold Medal Match (Load #922A, standard velocity) through those rifles with the following results:

Extreme Spread 43~55 fps
Standard deviation 8~9 fps
Mean velocity: 1,040~1,060 fps

In short:
Fed 711B is comparable to CCI SV
Fed 719 is comparable to CCI Blazer
Fed 922A was manufactured in Germany by RWS, and is comparable to RWS Rifle Match.

I just got a brick of Federal Premium Hunter Match (#720 LHP, 1,200 fps). I'll be testing it as soon as the weather lifts.

Shot some Gold Medal Target in my 40X, Win 75 Sporter, and a 52B last weekend and I was pleasantly surprised to see it shot as well as the SK Standard Plus I was also testing. Both shot very well in my rifles. Hoping to find some more of it soon- I think Targetsports.com has it cheaper than the SK Standard Plus....

Federal 714 is descent standard velocity. It groups good for a few shots and then you get a hot one. $240 a case and in stock at target sports

I just picked up a bunch of it for $15/brick. I seen them at Cabela's also for $4.99/box. That's $50/brick. A bit expensive. They do shoot decent in the guns I have tried them in.

I have not tried the Fed Gold Medal Target SV in my Trailside, but its performance in most of my rifles has been dismal. It is the worst shooting ammo in three of my rifles, as in averaging 1.8" groups at 50 yards. Only my CZ 452 FS shoots it well, but then it shoots everything well. I don't even bother shooting it anymore. In my opinion, it is definitely not worth $5/box or $50/brick.

For lower priced ammo, my Trailside shoots CCI SV and Fed AutoMatch well. Moving up in the price category, it also shoots SK+ and SK Pistol Match well too, as it should given the price differential.

I shot it in three Anschutz sporters, 1416s and a 1712, and was very disappointed in the accuracy. I won't buy more.

Thanks all. I read some spotty reviews, some saying older lots are better than new.

I did find some CCI standard Velocity Target, so I bought 5 sleeves of 100. Hope they do well

In my Tikka T1X the Federal 711B seems to have less fliers than CCI STD Velocity. It also not as tight to chamber.

I was lucky to buy a case+ at $2.86 a box of 50 just before everyone started buying ammo.

I would recommend it

I've tried most of the Federal labeled 22lr.
Those cartridges made in the USA, are hunting and plinking cartridges.
Take a close look at them, you can see they aren't high quality ammunition.
Results on target and chronograph numbers indicate a lack of quality control
on the Federal assembly line. The Federal labeled RWS produced 22lr
show fewer visible cartridge defects and better chrony numbers.

Funny you should say that. The lot of Federal Gold Medal Target I was shooting has been in my stock for quite a while.... you may have saved me from investing in a new batch and wasted my ammo budget....

Was checking out various fodder for my new to me Martini last week. Shooting groups and shooting through the chronograph. A partial box of twenty year old Gold Medals was in the mix.
Loaded up the cartridge block while watching wind flags. Mr Woodchuck had come out to feed just beyond my back stop. First test round went into his Medulla Oblongata at 73 yards but didn’t pass through sky screens. Remaining fourteen were worst group tested varying from 1096fps to 960 fps. Must have one good round out of fifteen!
