Special Build Stock Voting 2

Hi all. Working on the stock now for the special build

Unfortunately the Cocobolo is just not dry enough to work with, and zebrawood is pretty much impossible to find in 3" stock in any large size. We are left with 3 viable options

Bocote. Most expensive and dried 4 years. Is pretty oily so it may crack.

Bubinga. Middle ground, kiln dried and ready.

Padauk. Kiln dried and ready Cheapest and my personal favorite. As it oxidizes it turns almost a burgundy walnut color.

So I'll leave it to a vote. Reply 1 for Bocote, 2 for Bubinga, and 3 for padauk.

Let's see:

Bacote - I use it for forend tips and grip caps but usually will wipe with acetone before gluing because of the oil. But it finishes well and looks great on maple.

Padauk - pretty but I have onjly used for tips and caps as well.

Bubinga would be my vote. I have also used for tips and caps but I think it would make a great looking stock due to the 3D nature of the grain and figure.

So my vote is: #2

The oiliness of the Bocote is also it's downfall. The general rule is 1year per inch of thickness to dry, but Bocote and Cocobolo have been know to be moist 5-7 years later. The Bocote is close but I don't think close enough

So we have 1 for 1 and 1 for 2.

I agree, but the blank would be nearly $250 plus milling and we have only about $130. Plus there's no gaurantee it wouldn't twist ahrink or crack soon after milling. If my guy said 6 or 7 years I wouldn't have even put up a vote.
