The other rifles have no interference with the round as it pushed into the chamber.

DoubleD - do you have any old literature from BSA, etc. that explicitly states or shows that this is the normal condition (i.e. that the breechblock should slightly block entry of a fresh cartridge)?

I have never heard/seen this anywhere and all the small frame (and large frame, for that matter) martinis I have had over the years, and still have, all allow the cartridge to slide right into the chamber without lowering the lever against mainspring pressure.

a normal condition ,, designed that way so you could carry it hunting with a round in the chamber safely. the block keeps the round from falling back out. not all shooting is about targets.

Maybe so, but I'd still like to see some documentation where these were actually designed that way.

Most of the sporting (i.e. hunting) martinis I have seen had safetys.

The Armorers instructions for the MH describe this adjustment and a number of other related to this action.

Look in in the back of the SAIS 15 for the Martini Henry. It is also found in the The Treatise for the British Martini Henry. You will find a number of Martini adjustments in these two books.

Also every single near new condition Martini i have every had was this way.

Most of the used BSA's you will buy have been heavily messed with. Most I have seen are so far out of adjustment. Recutting and shortening the trigger nosecan and will put this out of wack.
