Just a little fun with the Tikka T1x

I've had my T1x to the range three times so far, with a little over 300 rounds through it, so I'm beginning to see what this rifle is capable of. In short, it shoots on par with my beloved CZ 452 American & FS, and the Weatherby Mark XXII. Sometimes a little better, sometimes a little worse, depending on which ammo is being used, but on average just as good.

Overall results to date, for 5-shot groups at 50 yards:

CCI SV - 0.76" (last session was 0.69")

Tac 22 - 0.73" (last session was 0.59")

SK+ - 0.64" (last session was 0.64")

Geco (bolt) - 0.80"

I'm the first to admit those are not stellar results in the shooting world, but then I'm not a stellar shooter. All groups were fired using front & rear Protektor bags, with a Nikon P3 3-9x40 Target EFR scope. The only thing I've done to the stock rifle was to add the extended rubber butt pad.

The fun part? After shooting groups time after time, I put up a target with 20 red 1/2" circles on it, similar to the tack driver target, and did one shot per circle. I fired 5 rounds each of CCI SV and Tac 22, and 10 rounds of SK+. I hit the red circle 8 of 10 times with the SK+, 3 of 5 for the CCI SV, and 4 of 5 with the Tac 22. The few that missed were within 1/4", except for one round of SK+ that for some reason ended up 3/4" low. Probably me, not the ammo.

What surprised me was that all rounds (except that SK+ oddball) were within ~1/4" of the horizontal centerline; the "misses" were usually off a bit to the left or right. Amazingly consistent. And it was certainly fun to fire one round per target, just to see how accurate the rifle is in my hands, under "real world" conditions when you may only get one shot.

If I only had one shot, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the T1x.

Nice report.
Wish I could use a 3-9 scope on my 22's like I used to be able to do, but I can't.
You might try a higher power scope and see your groups shrink some. Just a thought.
My T1X very consistently shoots .5" or better at 50 yards and I don't think it's just me being a great shot. I'm getting old (69) and my eyes just aren't what they used to be. But a 6-24X scope is a great asset for me.

Enjoy your T1X regardless of what glass you have on it. Great rifle for its price.

What scope are you using on your T1X?

I've thought about a higher power scope, but if I upgrade the Tikka scope, the rest of the rifles will start whining, and I can't afford to upgrade them all. The 452 American is already wearing a Weaver Grand Slam 3-12x42, the 452 FS & Mark XXII have to make do with Leupold 3-9x33 EFR scopes. Now if I only had one or two rifles....

Nah.

I'm more than pleased with the Tikka. It's a keeper.

Good idea! Shooting for groups is fun but that first shot is what counts in the woods.

Yep. Those "one shot per aiming point" targets break up the monotony of shooting 5- or 10-shot groups, and are a challenge in their own right.

You're right, this is tougher than it sounds. Tried it today, although the dots I had were a little bigger, about 3/4". I got 18 of 20, the 2 misses were both in the last 5 shots. A couple of others barely made it. Used Minimags as that was what I was sighted in with. Gonna try it again with something that's a little more consistent.
