Boyds At-one Thumbhole & T1X

Log in to see fewer ads
While waiting to get all my parts back in one place I ordered a T3 stock. Basic fitting was easy.
I still need to tweek the inletting a bit but the basic fitment was real easy.

Stock At-One unmodified:
Item: 7GA114R851ZZ

Removed a little of the inside inletting around the mag well:

You can remove all the narrow part of the stock, I left a little.

T1X

The only gap in the barrel channel is at the first couple inches past the action. I think with a small
amount of fitting I can use the factory plastic stock barrel insert so the stock's barrel channel will be filled.

Bob,

That does look good.

When, or is Boyd's going to be offering a line of stocks made specifically for the T1x?

Thanks

I'm send them mine so they have something to start making a pattern. If it were me I would just modify the current
programming so the T3 stocks would accommodate the T1X.

Nice job.

What specific tool(s) did you use to open up the channel? Dremel? Rasp? Chisel? All of them?

That would certainly make sense. Just a small change in the program for the T3 stocks. I wish other stock makers might do the same.

I used a Dermel with the barrel sanding drum. Works great for the inletting around the action. You could start with a chisel and
clean it up with the Dremel to make removal a little faster. Still does not take very long.

The barrel channel is almost a perfect fit.(sorry for the poor pic)

At the yellow marks is where the factory insert will be fitted.

Thanks for the followup photo. I would imagine that the trigger guard hides any marks remaining (if any) on the bottom of the stock.

I'm not a big woodworking guy but I do have a bunch of Dremels and attachments to do this kind of work. In the past I've taken Boyd's At-One stocks and smoothed out the top of the grip where there is too much of the squared-off geometry. Really like the versatility of the At-One, its balance and weight and general look. Just need some better Tikka options.

Correct:
Removal of the inletting wood is all well inside the stock so you have nothing that is exposed or even close
to being seen when assembled.

Sent mine off to Boyd's. I will touch base with them late next week and see if there is any progress and what they
might have come up with.

Followed your directions HotRod. Bought at Boyds At-One thumbhole in nutmeg. Got a T3 Detachable Magazine contour.

Had to remove entirety of the small shoulder inside and smooth it flush with a Dremel. Only problem was not touching other surfaces with spinning sanding drum. Oops. But doesn’t show.

Also has to inlet the last few inches of barrel channel to ensure complete free float of barrel. Not a big deal at all.

Also used some “bees wax” formula on wood and cleaned up the stock very nice. Looks great.

The small gap in front of the receiver is covered by my snug-fitting scope so no problem there.

Thanks for the guidance.

Looks nice. How are you liking that thumbhole stock?

Haven’t been able to find one local to handle

Really like the fit of the thumbhole. Was a little unsure at first. But after shooting it I found it very comfortable and not even a mental factor once I got to shooting. The finish is a tad slick in the grip hole and I might, maybe, perhaps, but unlikely, will add some grippy type tape in the front part of the pistol grip. In all, not a bit disappointed.

I also have a regular grip Boyds At-One on my T3X in 223 and like it just as much. But I had to take my Dremel to some of the squared-off geometry around the grip for it to be comfortable. The thumbhole is more comfortable.
