Scariest movie you ever saw

I've seen quite a few that creeped me out. It would be hard to come up with just one; but I'll give it some thought.
As a kid, probably one of the scariest, that left the longest lasting impression, was the B&W "Invaders from Mars"

. . . .then there was the The Haunting, another B&W chiller.

I'm turned off/away by the modern trend towards gore and much prefer the classics that get their scare factor from suspense (Hitchcockesque) or that frightening sense of "it happened to ordinary people!" That's the theme of your Invaders from Mars, as it was in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both versions good, IMO) and The Exorcist. The chills that went up my spine in The Exorcist came when Regan spoke in that demonic voice.

I remember seeing that as a "rerun" as a kid in the 1970s. I loved it.

What scared the bejeezus out of me was Jaws in 1975 (I was 10) and Alien in 1979 (I was 14).

After those movies, all the rest just made me jump in my seat but never really scared me.

Of course, Jaws nowadays is almost like a wholesome family movie.

I saw the 2nd one when I was 13. Geez, any plant thing that's going to take over my body and soul while I sleep creeped the livin' crud out of me. Donald Sutherland was creepy enough in that movie and then he became a POD!!!!

The Exorcist was ahead of its time in terms of scary movies definitely up there .For me Silence of the Lambs was the scariest as it seems realistic psycho serial killer. I don't care how much gore is in a movie if it doesn't seem realistic it's just not scary to me.

for me.....

….as a kid, I was a teenage werewolf with the very scary Michael Landon.

as an adult, The Exorcist, hands down.

I don't like scary movies, to me they are not "entertaining". I go to movies for some laughs, to be entertained and escape. One of my favorites is Ruthless People with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler. I laughed like crazy, and didn't want it to end.

Lots and lots when I was a little kid were the "scariest."

I'd have to say that as an adult, it is "The Shining".

Nowadays, I don't watch scary, creepy movies...politics today is scary enough.

I read that one long before I saw the film. The book was very scary, I thought; the movie less so.

For me it was “ House of a 1000 corpses” by Rob Zombie. I was getting some new ink on my chest and the guys at the tattoo shop we’re watching a Rob Zombie movie marathon. Now, I’ll make it well known, I don’t like horror movies at all. The horrors in real life are bad enough already. And I really think that there is something seriously wrong in any bodies head to think up a movie like that.

That danged movie gave me, an adult man (that has seen real horrors) nightmares for months!

Rosemary’s Baby

Rosemary’s Baby. A little light entertainment at my boys’ school movie night.

When I was a kid my Mom wouldn't let me go see Night of the Living Dead. People fainting in the theater, women miscarrying, all that. Saw it years later with some Navy buddies. We howled laughing all the way through it.
The Exorcist is the scariest for me. It isn't jump-out-and-say-boo scary or gore fest scary but it gets you deep in your gut. Seeing a little girl do those things is really disturbing.
