Model 422, 622, 2214, 2213, 622A questions

I haven't seen much on here in regards to the model 422, 622, 2214, 2213, 622a, etc. Here's a few questions...

What are the differences b/w these models? (I know a few of the differences but it would be good to know everything)

Are there any common problems with these models?

The 622A (matte aluminum/steel finish) is a hard-to-find model with a skeletonized slide, is there such thing as a 422A (blued finish)?

Most models are aluminum frame, are there any models made in steel frame?

I have a 422 with a 6" barrel and I love it. It feels right in my hand and shoots very well. I'd take the 422 over the 22A anyday, just my preference.

Any and all info on these models is appreciated.

Thanks & keep the brass flying!

Hi, if you use the "Search" feature you will find lots of threads about these guns.

I have never seen a #422 with a VR, but have seen the #622 VR models in both 4.5" & 6" barrel lengths.

The #2206 is the stainless steel version of this series.

The only common problem with these pistols is that S&W discontinued the entire series. The blue/black finish on the #422/2214 wears easily. My #2214 has the limited edition brushed nickel finish, thankfully.

Never seen a 2214 with brushed nickel finish. I think you mean 2214. Do you have pics? I thought the 2214 were all blued steel and the 2213 is alloy frame/stainless slide like mine.

I own two 422's, a six inch and a four inch barrel. Much better than the 22A, which I had and sold with no regret.

I can't help much with the family tree part. But I first bought a 422 with 6inch barrel about three years back. Last summer I found an all stainless 2206 with 4.5 inch barrel in a store on consignment. The two of them have shot many thousands of rounds downrange now and other than the rare FTF they've both done wonderfully and are superbly reliable.

I've seen references to difficulties but I suspect most of them could be cured with a recoil spring replacement. The other possible cause is magazines. I know that one magazine out of the 7 I have has a stamped and spot welded steel follower. That one magazine works in the 422 but not the 2206. I'm still not sure of the reason why but it's clearly a magazine issue and not due to the gun.
