511 Serial number data?

Log in to see fewer ads
I am trying to get the age of my 511. I need a new magazine retainer, and there are 2 to choose from. The one on the gun matches up to the one that says "screws into wood", but it it has single screw into the receiver insert , not wood.
The one picture for "late model" has 2 screw holes that look as though they would match up to the holes in the receiver insert. Any input would be appreciated. Searches say no serial numbers on 511's, only date stamps. Mine has both.

Fwiw, Ive found that on a number of my guns I have to go by the 'features' of parts rather than depend on date codes. Transitions are rarely well defined.

From what I found by looking up Remington manufacture dates is it was made in June of 1942. P is June and L is 1942. The serial was not put on your gun by Remington, not sure why it is there, but Remington did not put serial numbers on 511's.

Early would be the 2 holes and screws onto receiver insert. Late would be one screw that installs onto stock with one wood screw. Not sure when they changed but I would guess yours needs the two screws and mounts to receiver insert. Reciever insert should have both holes threaded. As I recall the holes in the later receiver inserts are not threaded. If your stock is original to the action and has no hole in the wood just behind magazine well that is clue # 2 that you need the action mounted magazine latch. I have read that the early model can use latch you have if it is switched over to stock mounting. I have done that on one or two and got them to work. Just need to get the hole in the correct location. Worst case you can still get the old model parts and you are good to go.

I have a 1939 510 which has a serial number, but on the barrel forward of the forearm, just like this 513T:

I have no reason to think that the earliest 511s were not also numbered.

I do not see why anyone other than the manufacturer would mark such an inexpensive firearm with numbers like the ones on the receiver in pic I posted above.

Only one I have seen stamped like that on receiver. I have had several like edlmann's but don't recall if any were 511's. A couple were 510's for sure.

I too have a Serial Numbered 511...

My Dad's Remington 511 Scoremaster does not have the usual cryptic date codes. It does have a serial number stamped under the barrel, just forward of the wood stock. I have been unable to determine date of manufacture using this number. If any one knows of the secret book of serial numbers, I would be ever so grateful.

Serial Number: 17295

I'll post a pic as soon as I can get an image hosting account set up..

Call Remington? I will guess 1939 maybe early 1940. Then no serial numbers.

I will only guess as to why there is a serial number on the 511. War contract guns maybe?

The first year five-teens had serial numbers, then none. Have a very early 510 with a serial.

The two problems for this being factory are the location and it is a 1946 production. JMHO but it appears it was put on by someone other than Remington. The other thing I noticed is the numbers are stamped up and down not level.
