I recently picked up a Marlin 881 at a local pawn shop. I've had my eye on it for quite some time. It was priced way more than I was willing to spend on it. (Over $300). After being there for months I said I was interested but the price was a show stopper. I ended up taking it home for $200 out the door. That's probably not the greatest bargain but the gun has beautiful walnut and was in pristine condition. This is the only tube fed bolt action I have handled and the bolt is stiff to close after making contact with the cartridge elevator assembly. Not sure if that's normal. It looks to have been fired very little as the bluing on the feed lips hasn't even worn off. Gave it a good cleaning and waxed the stock with homemade concoction of beeswax, boiled linseed oil and orange oil paste. I am looking forward to the first range session. My current favorite squirrel rifle is a model 60 I bought at 18yo brand new in 1984 for $57.00. I hope this gun shoots as well as that one. I currently also own the aforementioned model 60 a lakefield mkll. Glenfield 25. And a Zastava in 22wmr.

that is a great looking rifle, and i would have probably been tempted at $300.

To snag it for $200 is the frosting on the cake.

Always have felt the marlin bolt guns are under-appreciated , & make excellent hunting guns. Are you scoping it? Any thought as to which glass, if so?

congrats on a nice find.

Great looking rifle. I remember my 81 having a stiff bolt at the lug engagement.

Nice rifle and a good deal. I have always enjoyed Marlin rifles and they never disappointed me.
Enjoy yours.

Fyrepowrx; yes it will get scoped. I currently have a bushnell rimfire 3.5-10 I think... great scope for the $59 bucks I paid.....but I would like to get an older weaver maybe. These old eyes dont do as well with iron sights as they used too...

RobustRN,
I bought one of those new in 1990 and the bolt closure was stiff for about 100 rounds. Got smooth quick and stayed that way. I love old Marlins.

I dont think this rifle has had very many rounds through it as the feed lips still have all the finish on them. Maybe it will loosen up after some use. The stiffness is definitely from the cartridge elevator, the bolt is smooth when I hold the elevator down manually. Still trying to hawk a Redfield or Weaver vintage scope.
