Winchester Model 1906 rear sight

Log in to see fewer ads
I have a Winchester Model 1906 (std) manufactured in 1912 (based on serial number). It is missing the rear sight. It has a 3/8" dovetail for the rear sight mount as opposed to a screw mount type with screw elevator. All of the 1906's I see on the internet seem to have the screw type sight. Can anyone tell me if it is possible I have a 1906 variation with an original dovetail or has someone cut a dovetail where the screw hole was?

IIRC The mounting screw on the correct 1906 rear sight tightens into a piece that slides sideways into the dovetail in the barrel of the rifle as opposed to screwing into a hole drilled and tapped into the top of the barrel. I believe your rifle is as all other 1906s are.

Thank you Jimmy. Is this piece that slides into the dovetail similar to a drilled and tapped dovetail blank and separate from the sight itself or is it part of the sight?

Yes--its a part of the sight--picture a shallow loose fitting dovetail blank that slides rather freely from side to side but drilled and tapped for the retaining screw passing through the front hole of the sight which tightens the sight into place--the elevation screw then bears against the barrel body to raise the rear of the sight as needed

Yarbe....

here is pic of 1906 rear sight....the dovetailed screw is reverse or left-hand threaded. It is placed in the dovetail and then threaded up into the sight base by turning the screw slot in the normal direction eventually tightening the sight to the dovetail in the barrel.

Great information from both of you, which is frankly unusual for me, I normally get forum answers to questions that I didn't ask while my question is ignored.
Now I know what sight I'm looking for. I've already passed up three purchase opportunities because I wasn't sure.

SABT--memory lapse--now I remember the LH threaded part that slides into the dovetail and tightens--that's what happens when I don't get into the gun safe and check out the sitchi before starating to type

sight adjustment

I have also the 1906 with no screw rear sight. How do you adjust the front and rear sight? Thanks Ron

You are missing the rear sight elevator. Check eBay for a replacement.
