With edited photos it becomes a little clearer but since the stamps were applied by hand, there are also variances because of that. Nevertheless, there is indeed a difference, with the older stamp having a closed lower feather lines in between the wings as an easy to spot difference. It is indeed a helpful hint to separate post war pre 1962 proofs into two sub categories.

What's the story with the first "9" on that gun? It looks like it was struck at least twice and after the blueing was done.

It was on September 12, 1965 at the tender age of five that I was in the Anschütz factory at the very time that this exact rifle was getting proofed by Hans. The 1965 Oktoberfest had opened the day before and Hans was still having slight double vision on the morning following that great event. Helga and Trudi had served him at least 12 Maßen and real men don't drink 12 oz beers.

Funny guy.

It was October, 1974, and this backpacking 21 y.o. visited the Hofbrauhaus in Munich one evening, and the next day, for what was supposed to be goodbye drink with some Australian girls we had met that night. That next day drink turned into a ten+ hour event, and my bud and I didn't have a room for that night. Our imaginations ran wild, but we slept in a pup tent they provided us, not in their van with them.
It's true what they say about beer. You rent it, you don't buy it.

Just cruised through this thread. Didn't see the name Woodchucker mentioned. If it was, sorry.

That's the 1972, 1422 with the deeply set number 9, not the 1965, 1418?

Interesting Nitro Proof Eagle pictures. The difference in the pre "55" is very evident.
