Long time, no shoot but I'm back and starting to pull my benchrest rifles out for a bit of air! Working with some new BR shooters so, hopefully, they'll join in!

BSA "Famous" Model 12, Parker-Hale 7A rear and AGP Model 2 front, CCI SV
Cowan front rest. Protektor Bunny ear rear bag.
EXCUSES for not shooting well...just knocking the rust off!
Mostly cloudy, 88F, light winds.
49-2x 48-2x 50-1x 49-2x

Yes they do, Tom! Haven’t shot a rifle in competition since 2002. Eyes sure have changed along with sight picture, what once was seeing the scoring rings at fifty has changed to a blurry blob!
Will try to get more of the old time smallbore guys in our club out to dust off their rifles.

Cape Cod, MBSC, MBSC, 8/12/19

Cape Cod, MBSC, MBSC, 8/12/19

200-13x
David Lee Valdina
Martini 12/15, factory sights.
Wolf Match Extra.
Harris Bi-Pod & Caldwell rear bag.
77 degrees, sunny, 8-12mph.
50-3x, 50-5x, 50-2x & 50-3x = 200-13x

I also shot some 36 & 40 gr. CCI-Mini-Mags as I have been reading that the transition from supersonic to subsonic isn't really the problem it's been made out to be. See long thread here on RFC about shooting 50 rounds @ 200 yards. The 40 gr. grouped better than the 36 gr. The 40 gr. might be capable of shooting a 200 something x score. I had not changed dope on the sights and as expected, the groups were a bit higher on target, more so with the 36 gr. than with the 40 gr.

Still knocking the rust off...

199-7x (Unlimited) Bill Parkhurst. Sheffield, Alabama (AQBill)
Weihrauch HW 660 Match, Walther Rear & Anschütz Front, Federal UM22
Cowan front rest. Protektor Bunny ear rear bag.
EXCUSES Had to "box" the rear sight to find out it was dry and vertically unresponsive. This was the better of two targets. Low X count shows that I still have much work to do!
Sunny cloudy, 88F, light winds.
50-2x 50-2x 49-1x 50-2x

Remington 511, Redfield 75 and Lyman 17A sights
SK Rifle Match ammo
48-1X. 50-3X, 50-1X, 50-1X

Back to my Remington 511 after experimenting with several other rifles. I also took my Mossberg 144LSB but it (I?) didn't doo well.

Rob, that's really great shooting with a Remington 511. I'd really like to see a picture of how you have it rigged-up! Do you shoot off a bench or bipod?

August 2019

200/16X times 2, Tom Billeter, Tucson
FWB 2600, factory sights with adjustable iris, Eley CMP bulk and SK Std+.
50/3X, 50/4X, 50/4X, 50/5X = 200/16X
53/3X, 50/5X, 50/4X, 50/4X = 200/16X

And 199/8X with RWS Target Rifle

This rifle is the best buy I've ever made rimfire wise.

agbill:

I was given the 511 by my mother, who wanted me to have an accurate rifle at a summer camp in New Hampshire in 1954 at age 11. I transplanted it into a 513 stock which I got from Numrich and refinished. I also bedded the receiver with some rubber bicycle tire liner and made a shim for the front of the stock because the 511 barrel is thinner than the 513. The shim is 2 layers of tire liner and one of a piece of plastic from a 35MM film canister. I also shimmed the bolt to reduce headspace. The stock was cut down so the length of pull is 12 1/2" and I added a rail underneath for an adjustable handstop rail so I could use the rifle for 3-position matches. Finally, I replaced the Lyman rear sight with a Redfield 75 and the front with the bigger Lyman 20MJT globe sight that uses Anshutz clear discs.

Our local club used to have informal benchrest matches so I shot in them before discovering this forum. I use a Protektor front and rear rest and use SK Rifle Match ammo.

I haven't scored 200 yet, but I've had several 198's. The range is pretty windy so I'm always in danger of that effecting my score. While I've "accurized" the 511 somewhat, I get a kick out of using a $37 rifle against the competition.

That looks great, Rob! The old 510-512’s shot very well. My fathers old 512 made some incredible shots in its day even after being beat up as a coon hunting gun most of its life. He bought it new from the PX during Korean conflict. With a broken stock I fitted it to an old Marlin stock as a teenager turning a closet gun into a shooter.
I once performed a headshot on a Crow at 268 paces with that Marlington, legendary status!

Very nice, Rob! Custom all the way...keep working at it and you'll find those 200s will come. I've just started working with a vintage Remington 41-P. Hope my eyes can deal with those funky old "Point Crometer" sights. Tuning those things is a real work of art but early work has resulted in some pretty good groups out of the old girl.

First 50 bull and all holes touching. Last two bulls, started drifting left and could not bring them back in. Should have couple more months of decent weather before I loose the 50yd range due to snow ice on road.
