Pick your calibers or follow someone else's advice, but it takes 5 barrels to cover the whole spectrum of what a Contender can do.

So, go for 3, but then once there, try for 5. That ought'a do it.
I now only have my 7TCU 16.125". It covers deer and varmints with various loads. A 6TCU may be a better choice for this, but this one works well.

A rimfire is a good candidate for small game where centerfires are not permitted. I am heavily leaning toward a WMR.

A 357 Mag is almost a must have. There is some overlap at the top end with the 7TCU when it comes to deer sized game, but low recoil plinking loaded to 38 spcl pressures is where this would shine. The bullets are less expensive too. A close alternate in this category would be a 9mm or a 32 for low cost reloadable centerfire shooting and forget about dual use on larger game. This concludes my updated top three.

For the other two barrels I would likely pick something starting with a 4, but that last barrel would be a tough one. Assuming I have the 7TCU, 22WMR, 357Mag, and say a 45 Colt, I would likely opt for a diminutive cartridge in the 25-20 to 327 Fed Mag range.

The first three barrels I bought for my G1 frame.

10" octagon .30-30
10" Bull .357 Herritt
10" .22 LR (iron sights)

The .22 LR had a ding in it but the seller claimed it shot fine. Didn't. I did recrown it years later and it improved a lot.

Wanting a good .22 LR barrel I bought a 10" match .22LR and put a scope on it. With an Elite 3200 2-6x scope this one is a lot of fun shooting 100y. This barrel has me wanting to get the other two barrels out and see how good I can shoot them.

If I could go back in time, that 30-30 would be changed to a 7-30 Waters and maybe the Herritt would be the .30 version.

Contenders are fun guns.

Gosh......
I have a 22lr-12 and 7x30 Waters 16 that I would keep and my third would be a toss up between my 12 45-70 factory ported or my 16358JDJ Mag-an-Port.
I think I would consider a 16 .35 Rem ported if I can find one - shot IMSA for several years with the one I had - but foolishly traded it off
