Challenge barrel- stock sight to fiber optic sight

Had purchased the 4 inch Buckmark Challenge barrel to swap out a Camper barrel, but wanted to put a fiber optic sight on the new barrel.

The stock screw on blade type sight was .540 inches tall compared to the Camper sight of .420 inches tall. Since the Challenge barrel is thinner at the front than other Buckmark barrels, Browning had the threaded sight screw hole not as deep as the other barrels. Also the sight pilot pin couldn’t be driven in as far, so it stuck out taller. To rectify these small changes the pilot hole on the bottom of the sight was deeper and the base of the sight was thicker at the screw hole on the stock sight.

I bought a Dawson front fiber optic sight that was .475 in height and had to modify it. Slightly drilling the pilot hole deeper on the bottom of the sight until in fit flat against the barrel was the first step. It now fit flat against the barrel. The 2nd problem was the fiber optic sight was thinner at the screw hole so it wouldn’t tighten the sight down as the sight hole wasn’t as deep as the other barrels due to the thinner front end. Drilling and retapping the barrel was out of the question. So the other choice was to shorten the sight mounting screw.

The stock sight screw total length is .35 inches (9.0mm). By filing a little bit at a time and retesting mounting the sight and putting the screw in the barrel, I finally got the screw short enough to tighten the sight against the barrel. I had to file .08 inch (2.0mm) off the length of the screw. The length went from .35 inch to .27 inch (7.0mm). The sight now fit flat and tight on the barrel.

The Challenge barrel now has a fiber optic sight.

You could also use a Buckmark Hunter front fiber optic sight as it is taller than the stock .365 fiber optic or the Browning Hi-Vis .420 tall front sights. Also you could use one of the Dawson .520 or .475 tall fiber optic sights for the Buckmark.
You would stick have to shorten the sight mount screw even if using the Hi-Vis sight as the screw is still too long to tighten the sight against the barrel. You would need a taller sight, to sight in the pistol, as the rear sight adjustment screw would have to be screwed down to the lowest point using the .365, .375 or .420 tall sights.

Picture of the sights are Dawson .475, Buckmark Hi-Vis .420, Dawson .365, Buckmark fiber optic .365, and stock Buckmark .365.

The 5-1/2 inch Challenge barrel can also accept a fiber optic sight with these slight mods to the sight.

Could you have put some washers between the top of the sight and head of the screw to achieve the same effect as shortening the screw?

Took the sight and screw to a hardware store and couldn't find any washers that would fit. Not even a lock washer.

Photo of the stock round Micro barrel/ Bull (slabside) barrel front sight (height--.365), next to the Challenge stock front sight (height-- .530).

Dawson Sights makes a .525 fiber optic sight to replace the Challenge barrel sights.
