Custom Winchester 9422

Log in to see fewer ads
I've owned this for years and hope someone can help me learn more about it. It is an early .22 LR 9422, SN 358x with custom wood, Shilen barrel and a Kahles scope. The barrel is marked Shilen..Gillman. I found one reference on the forum to Tom Gillman who seems to have practiced in the time frame when this would have been done. Found a couple of pictures and checkering pattern has some similarities.
I would appreciate any comments about this possibly representing Gillman's work.
Thanks in advance for the help.

as a wood whore, I have to say that that is a spectacular piece of walnut on your rifle, and the checkering was also extremely well and tastefully done.

That's the nicest wood I have ever seen on a 9422! Outstanding.

Makes me wish that I had kept my 9422 High Grade, which had very nice wood.

if you have any gun collection shows you can check there. Also, did you try googling for "winchester collectors " or "winchester boards" just like RFC/CZ, Colt ect..????

you will find that there are boards for just about anything and everything collectable or what people have a passion for. RFC is just small grain of sand on the beach of forums/boards.

good luck

I have never seen a nicer 9422 . Amazing firearm. My stock is very plain compared to yours. Good on you.

Nice looking gun. This is my factory original early production one. Wood isn't as pretty as yours but not bad for factory.

I thought I had heard of a gunsmith by the name Gillman in Illinois. I came up with a Gillman Gunsmith in Illinois. This might be a relative of the person who rebarreled your 9422. The Gillman in the link is from Milan which is near Rock Island Arsenal. There is a rich history of firearms businesses and craftsmen from this area.

I suspect Gillman chambered a Shilen barrel blank, installed it on your 9422 and checkered the stock. You have a fine piece of craftsmanship and history in that rifle. I suspect your 9422 will be a great shooter.

Here is a link with info on a Gillman who holds an FFL.
