Looks like a nice set up, especially if you need to haul a heavy rifle any distance.

I just picked up a X22 Backpacker stock for my takedown. I just have to say that I really like this stock. It fits great, looks great, and performs great. I took it out to the range this morning and I was really impressed. I have another takedown that will be getting one also. Anyone know when the color stocks will be shipping?

Not sure on the colored ones. I had a gray one on backorder. Got impatient and changed it to black. It is awesome.

Question about the optic mount on X22 backpacker

I just got my first 10/22 TD and will be putting it in an X22 backpacker stock soon.

I have the Skinner peep sights but am thinking about getting the Magpul optic mount too. My understanding is that the mount allows the use of iron sights without removing a Red Dot optic. Can anybody verify if that is true and how well it works? Can you actually use the iron sights and/or a mounted red dot just by shifting your cheek weld?

Also I would think if you installed a red dot on the Magpul optic mount, then you would want the taller cheek riser. That makes me wonder if you can get down low enough to still use the iron sights through the slot in the Magpul optic mount. Or do you have to have the lower cheek riser installed to be able to use the iron sights?

Any 1st hand experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !

I installed mine and shot it last weekend with the factory barrel. I had to use the standard cheekrest and not the optic cheekrest to see the factory iron sights. The optic cheekrest was too high.

Bud's gun shop has it in stock (I think they drop ship it). $90 + $10 shipping.

(I just read your reply)
Thanks for letting me know. I actually ordered it Friday night (7/14) after I got out of class. Luckily I ordered the (wanted) accessories I didn't already have on Thursday.

I've got an AGP takedown kit on mine. Got it before the Ruger came out. Got the X-22 Backpacker and installed it. The forearm wouldn't work for two reasons. No lug on the barrel. I thought about drilling and threading the underside of the AGP barrel, but was not comfortable doing that as the barrel is only about 5/8" diameter. The X-22 forearm is also too long.

Ended up making a cradle from 3/4" PVC pipe and installing it on the pistol grip cap. To keep the barrel from sliding around. A Velcro strap holds everything together. Works like a charm.

Give us your thoughts on the AGP kit. Its interesting. I appears to work like the Marlin Papoose, with a collar that screws into a stub attached to the receiver? Does it return perfectly to zero when dis/reassembled?

Nice job on the Backpacker install... Necessity is the Mother of Invention.

It is similar to the Papoose. I had a Papoose and it was OK, but no matter what you did, you had two separate pieces to pack away either in the case that came with the gun or in a backpack. And, the Papoose did not have the aftermarket support the 10/22 has. So, I let the Papoose go. I had a Ruger and decided to get the AGP kit. Also got the AGP folding stock.

I have the same problem I think a lot of us have on this site. So many guns it is difficult to shoot them all. I haven't shot the AGP a lot, but haven't noticed any real difference in the point of impact when taken down. There is a video on the AGP site where they fire five ten shot groups at 25 yds and take the kit down after each group. There was not any significant difference in the groups.

They have several options for the nut that holds the barrel on. Mine has the plain nut. Also have the carbon fiber handguard which has the nut as part of it.

Had the Ruger takedown been out I probably would have gotten it. But, I like the AGP and can use it with the peep sights, a red dot or scope. Carry one piece and have the extra magazine (s) and ammo.

Brownells has the FDE stocks. I pre-ordered a OD one but cancelled that and went with a FDE one.
