If you want to get an appreciation for what a .22 target rifle can do, check out the scores from the NRA Smallbore Conventional Prone Championship which is finishing up today at Bristol Indiana.

The format is 120 shots for record per day. Days 1 & 2 are Metallic Sights. Days 3 & 4 are "Any Sight" meaning use of a scope is optional. All firing is from prone with a sling for support.

Course of fire:
--50 meter match: 40 shots, A26 target
--Dewar match: 20 shots at 50 yd on A23 target and 20 shots at 100 yd on A25 target
--100 yard match: 40 shots on A25 target.

Here are the dimensions of the 10-ring and X-ring:
A26 = .787" / .393"
A23 = .89" / .39"
A25 = 2.0" / 1.0"

The aggregates scores are the overall results. These are sliced and diced into a bunch of sub matches.

Looking ahead to 3-Position, what's the difference between "Conventional" and "Metric?" Metric distances (meters vs. yards)? Something else? Thanks.

"Conventional" prone is fired on the targets I listed. One of them is the A26 which is a US NRA target designed for 50 meters. There are both actual 50 meter and 50 meter reduced for 50 yards versions.

"Metric" prone is fired on different targets but the rules are the same. These targets are scale reductions of the ISSF 300 meter target. The scoring rings are much tighter than the NRA targets including the A26/A27 "50 meter" target. Here are the 10-ring dimensions for comparison:

A50 50 meter target, 10-ring = 0.41"

A33 100 meter target, 10-ring = 1.045"

I have no idea why these matches are set up this way.

3P, Prone and report

Hap Rocketto has a short report on the 3P finals in the Target Talk blog (Pilkington Competition) website The level of competition is amazing. However the total attendance was down to approx. 90 competitors, numbers declining steadily every year the event has been held away from Perry. This is the premiere smallbore shooting event in the nation, and a sad commentary on the sanctioning bodies and stewardship of American shooting.

The prone championship only had 90 competitors. What was typical at Camp Perry....250?

I shot the prone championship at Perry a couple times...did a few different things there mostly in 1980s. Had to be at least 200 shooters there in those days. if you told me 400+ I would believe it. It was quite a week. Always challenging conditions, with the wind coming off the lake. I think most or all the 100 yard targets were shot later in the day. I hope it is not a thing of the past.
