983T ammo testing..

Took my Marlin 983T out to the range for more ammo testing @ 100yds last friday. So far, the ONLY ammo that were acceptable small game loads were Win Supreme 34gr jhp, CCI TNT GREEN 30gr HP and (surprise) SPEER GOLD-DOT 40gr GDHP-SHORT BARREL!!!! Everything else printed shotgun sized groups.

Anybody else have riffles with such expensive feeding habits?

Looks like my 39a will get the lions share of small game duty with Velocitors.

1894,
I have a Marlin 983S and have had good results with the following brands of ammo. Winchester Super-x 40gr HP, Winchester Supreme 34 gr HP,
Remington accu-tip 33 grain, The new Winchester HV 30grain v-max and the Hornady 30 grain v-max. All the rest group greater the 2'' at 100yds.

The CCI TNT speer 30 grain HP and the Federal 50 grain HP wont even hit a
3'' circle target at 50yds ! Never tried the winchester dyna-points, CCI V-max or the remington 40grain PSP.

My Savage 93 HB likes about everything for hunting purposes. . . meaning it will shoot under 2" at 100 yds. with everything I have tried except the Dynapoints. Rifles are all such individuals as mine really likes the 50 gr. Federal Gameshok besides the Winchester 40 gr. JHP and the 30 gr. V-max. plus the Rem accu-tip. It likes Armscor and Fiocchi as well in 40 gr.

I had a Marlin 25 MN and it was much fussier re: ammo. Do Marlin .22 mags all have the micro-goove barrel?

I believe the MICRO-GROOVE technology was marlins claim to fame and is used in all of the 22 cal rifles. Not sure when it was introduced.

Until recently I've always shot the Win 40 gr HPs. I tried both Win 34 grain Supremes and Hornadys VMax and was impressed with each. The Supreme has a wicked looking HP and the VMax is explosive. I've planted a couple of fox in their footsteps with the VMax this year.

I haven't done much target work with either yet but while zeroing at 50 yards with my hunting set up I wasvery pleased.

My $.02 on Dynapoints is that I could have better spent my money. I have 3 boxes left for plinking.

Thanks for the responses so far.
Win Supreme 34gr. and CCI TNT Green ammo hold in at around 1" and 50yds with most everything else at 2 to 3 inches. Didn't try the Speer GDHP-SB at 50yds, just wanted to see what they did at 100yds ().

The ammo that I did try was;
CCI 30gr TNT
*CCI 30gr TNT GREEN
CCI MAXI-MAG +V 30gr
*Speer 40gr GDHP-SB
CCI MAXI-MAG 40gr JHP
Federal 30gr TNT
Rem. 40gr jhp (looks just like Maxi-Mag 40gr jhp)
*Win Supreme 34gr JHP
Win 40gr JHP
Win 45gr Dynapoint
Hornady 45gr Critical Defense

You don't state if you are using a scope. I own a Marlin 983T .22 magnum on which I have a Bushnell Banner 4X-12X scope. With cheapo PMC Predator ammo I bought on-line several years ago when it was being phased out, I can get ~1" - 1.5" groups at 100yds. With CCI ammo, I can do even better.

Sorry, does have scope.....

It's a Weaver 3.8-12X44 A/O with Varminter reticle. Did all shooting at 12X.

The dynapoint on my matlin 982 was shotgun like. Even the superX jhp were sucky. To my surprize, the 40g superX fmj grouped the best. I'll try more this weekend!

I tried a lot of different brands of ammo on my 983 and the winner for me was Federal GameShok 50 Gr. I never see it in stock at stores so I have to mail order it. It is especially more accurate in a crosswind than the 30 and 40 Gr. stuff.

Thanks, btolle. I'll have to get ahold of some and try it.

My 983S likes BVAC 40gr JHP best. Around 1.25" at 100 yards. Next would be Fiocchi 40gr JSP. I have a Bushnell Banner 4-12X40mm scope.
Never had any luck with stuff lighter than 40gr.
