Ruger Single-Six 50th..

Hello everyone,
I just bought myself a Ruger Single-Six 50th this weekend !
It is a beautiful gun, but it doesnt shoot worth a dang !
I think I am a pretty decent shooter, but this gun just plain
pissed me off. From a sitting position, I had to aim up and to
the left inorder to hit the center of the target at 25yds ! ?
I shot about 100 rounds trying different things, but it was
pretty consistent or at least I was ? I mean if there were
two guys standing side by side I would have to aim at the guy
on the left to hit the guy on the right ! Talked to a friend which
has several and he said to shoot at least 500 rounds before I
jump to conclusions; is he right ? Anyways, I love the look of
the gun and it's my first wheel gun, but just looking for suggestions
or comments.

Thanks,
Ram

Ram,
I had the same problem. I was about to sell mine and read some threads here that helped. Do a search for Poor mans trigger job, and try that. It really helped mine and my brothers. Mine has the rear adjustable sight. I prefer the look of what you have. Try different ammo as well it will like some better than others.

Yea, I like the look of the fixed sights because it looks more like
the original six shooters. :) I will try the poor man trigger job and
see if that helps. I shoot federal bulk from wally-world and really
don want to start buying the more expensive stuff because I
bought it to go plinking. I really dont like the look of the adjustable
sights on a revolver, so if the problem cant be fixed I will most
likely sell the thing a not look back ! :(

Thanks,
Ram

I think I might know your problem

I was reading Elmer Keiths sixgun book and he mentioned some guns will shoot to the right or left.I may be the barrel is screwed in too much or not enough.Take a good square look at the muzzle and see if the front blade is slightly off to one side.If it is its the barrel .

Your right ! the front sight appears to be slightly off to the right
if looking down the barrel (gun pointed at me). So, how does one
fix the problem ? Does it need to go back to the factory ?
I did take it out yesterday and sandbaged it and shot at 10 and
25yrds. It still shot to the right and low and is way off ! I mean
at 25 yrds aimming at the six position the P.O.I. is about
4 inches to the right and 6inches low ! I let off 12 rounds at each
distance and were pretty much 4 and 12 with the 10yrds being
4 and 10 to the right of P.O.A. ! I am taking the gun in today along
with the target to the gun shop where I bought it. They told me
if I had any problems to bring it back to them and they would
send it off for repair. Thanks for the tip I will let the gunsmith
know this and maybe he can fix it for me locally.
This is my first wheel gun and I am kinda no liking the idea of
a second...! never have had this problem with automatics. :(

Thanks,
Ram

**** shame that Ruger would turn out a product like that, especially the 50 th anniversary edition. Reminds me of buying a GM car back in the 60's. You bought it, hoped it got you home and then had to work on it constantly to keep it running.
I hope you get some satisfaction from Ruger. Keep us posted please.

or it will be the last Ruger product I ever buy !
I will let you know how Ruger handles this problem.

Thanks,
Ram
Having sold firearms for a local sporting goods store I assure you that Ruger takes care of problems promptly. I saw one case where a young man ran 5-6000 rounds through his Mark II within a monht or so of purchase and it got to the point where it wouldn't feed reliably. I sent it back and 2 weeks later he had all the parts replaced including a new barrel. Ask your dealer to handle the return; since its warranty he should do so at no cost to you.

Yes, I gave it back to my dealer and he is taking care of it. When
I asked about how long ?, he said 2 to 8 weeks !! I can deal with
2-4 weeks, but not 8 weeks ? I think he just made that number
up... Well, it's been one week and I am hoping it is at Ruger being
worked on. I sure hope it comes back soon so I can shoot the
darn thing !!!!

Thanks,

Update....

Well guys it back !!!,
Sent out 2/5 back in 2/24 (2.5 weeks !) . I havent had the
chance to try it out. I do have a complaint in that the front
sight appears to of been cut down some and was not re-blued !
They also scratched my handles  It's going to be a shooter,
so dont really want to get too worked up about it. Anyways,
they fixed the trigger up and it is smooooth now. I plan to go to
the range this afternoon, so l'll let you know if they fixed the
aiming problem. Overall, impressed at the turn around, but the
sloopy front sight job is a big disappointment and scratches to
the handles. I just hope that it will shoot straight then everthing
else will be tolerable.

it shot like a dream.....

Well I went out to the range yesterday and shot my new REPAIRED Single-Six (22lr).
It shot right to the mark at 25 yards and 50yrds ! Ruger did a great job of fixing the
aiming problem, but did a poor job of paying attention to
detail ! I will just re-blue my front sight and move on.

Ram

fixed my sights

I got the 50th anni. recently. It shot straight but about 4 or 5 inches low at 25 yards. So, I just filed about 1/8 inch off the front sight. Now it hits "X"s. With good ammo like Wolf or Eley it shoots 1" groups at 25 yards.

I also cut about 1/2 inch off the main(hammer) spring to lighten the action. Works great.

At the local army surplus store I found a leather western holster/belt made for 22s. It was made in Mexico and cost $60. It has little loops to hold extra 22 rounds.

This my favorite to shoot over my fouteen other .22s.

Ram you can reblue that front blade yourself-easy

I learned this reading a colt repair book. If you have one of those butane torches like home depot carries put the blade part in the flame and drop regular oil drop to drop on it while it cooks. Keep doing it till it reblues. It works!!! Maybe you can help me now. I have a colt new frontier 22/22mag in 4 3/4" barrel length(new from 1977). At ten yards I can keep 6 shots under an inch but when out to 25 yards Im lucky if I can keep them in 5" !! I tried lots of brand ammo but the rem yel jackets and winch super X prove the tightest at the ten yards test.Im thinking its a recoil and hold issue.I normally shoot both hands holding with my forearms rested on the bench and I tried a solid hard wood rest with just the frame resting.Any ideas?
