Cleaning rod length- How long do you really need??

Might be substantially longer than one thinks.
Remember you have barrel length and action length. Plus if you plan on using bore guide this will add to your needed length.

So before you purchase a nice cleaning rod study up.
I am a big time believer in carbon fiber cleaning rods. They aren’t cheap. So buy the right length for sure-definitely not too short.

Cheers.

Good tip. Less is not more in the case of cleaning rods.

Also if you have a very high comb on the stock (and usually made worse with a cleaning cover draped over the rear end) I like my rods to be long enough to reach the end of the barrel before the handle climbs the comb. Some may argue that very long rods can be more wippy in the back section that is outside the guide and harder to control - I have long arms so not a problem. Even with a good centering bore guide if the rod handle is pushed up when going over the comb it can cause the rod to be off centre in the bore.

My 30cal, 7mm and 6mm rods are also long enough to meet the above.

Yep, also great fan of carbon fiber rods. (but don't want to start the old carbon fiber versus coate/uncoated versus polished SS chestnut though )
