Voles ate my sweet potatoes!

Having planted several varieties of sweet potatoes over the past few years, I settled on Georgia Jets because of their nice orange interior and juicy sweet taste. I suppose that's what attracted the voles to them as well. I've never had voles before. Of the 50 plants I had in the ground and after three hours of digging, I discovered that at least half of them had chewing damage to them. I even sent three voles scampering from their grass nests located underground. Unless I can find a way to greatly reduce the vole damage, I'll not be planting any more sweet potatoes. Any suggestions?

Raised bed garden with a metallic mesh below to prevent them from burrowing up.

Get an outdoor cat. Solved my mole problem, I imagine they would eat voles as well.
Downside is a dead rodent deposited on the front stoop every few days.

The filthy animals!!!

I got you covered Al!

My great uncle would find an entrance to the underground tunnel's of varmints and run one end of a hose into it. The other end went on the exhaust of the lawn mower. Fire up the lawnmower and go inside and have a snack. When you come back out, nothing but dead and already buried varmints!

Mama always had a castor plant out by the garden. When voles showed up she would drop a few beans into the tunnel and they were shortly gone.

Set em by the entrances and cover em up with bucket or bowls to keep rain and tweeties off.

My thoughts exactly.

How did those voles taste?

Seriously though. This sounds like the perfect excuse to buy a Rodinator Pro.

Biologist never saw anything like the two I got and sent em in to the state lab and said he'd get back to me. He didn't know if they were moles or voles.
