I would be interested in participating in 3- or 4-position matches. In fact, I'm so interested I just signed up for the forum so I could express my interest.

There aren't a lot of opportunities for smallbore competition in my area, so this sounds pretty awesome.

I'm working on it!

I've talked to Shakey. We're discussing the idea via PM.

Talking

I'm very interested in 3- or 4-position iron sights postal matches (scan & post your own target type).
I wonder, if you get enough interest it may be possible to have Open Irons and Peep Sight division (and 25yd indoor & 50yd outdoor as well).

Are you thinking of having it monthly?
What about rules?
NRA Light Rifle or CMP Sporter to keep things simple and fair for those of us w/o Target Rifles?

CMP Sporter rules: http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/rimfire.pdf
NRA Section 22 "Light Rifle Rules": http://www.nrahq.org/compete/RuleBoo.../sbr-index.pdf
http://www.nrahq.org/education/train...ight_rifle.asp

Thanks for raising this great idea.

Many options

Definitely a Monthly Match scoring cycle. I don't see why we would need to have a limit on the entries/re-shoots. Maybe we make it a Monthly "brag board" type of post. You put up your own targets, report your score, list your equipment, and describe the conditions, alibis and fliers.

I'm trying to get some interest in using the older target rifles too. Personally I think there's room for all. I know there are folks out there that could out shoot me using a Romy M69 with iron sights, dirty bore, and a loose action. I think that would be part of the fun. At some point in the 3P/4P game, it's all about the shooter, and not so much the equipment.

My only concern about using the Sporter rules are the rapid fire portions of the course of fire. Depending on the range, it may not be allowed. If someone is shooting alone, who runs the clock? I'm leaning toward slow-fire stages only.

I would guess that we would leave it pretty open at first, and generate interest. If we end up with a large contingent of Sporters, then we could set aside a special class. If we're constantly loosing to a group of German Free-Rifles (Anschutz, FWB, Walther, etc.), then they'd have to compete with each other.

My motivation is to give us a place to compare and discuss 3P/4P smallbore using the rifles we have. With all of the Remington 40x, Mossberg 44, Winchester 52, Kimber 82g, etc that we collect, I just thought it would be fun to use them "as intended" Kinda like a "John C Garand Match".

I haven't really counted the possible permutations: Modern Free Rifle, Standard Rifle, Sporter, Indoor, Outdoor, 50 ft, 25-yd, 50-yd, open sights, aperture sights, Vintage Target, Vintage Military...

I have posted a link to this thread in other sections of RFC. If anyone belongs to other boards where people may be interested in Smallbore Position Postal Matches please start a thread there titled something like "Is Smallbore Position Shooting Dead?" with a link to here.

I think there is a great advantage having the equipment when changing positions (adjustable cheek plate, arm pit hook, stiff shooting jacket, fore end handle, etc.). Let's see how it goes and adjust the rules as necessary.

I see your point on rapid fire. I'd add the issue of shooting standing at 25 yds and the rest of positions at 50 yds (my range doesn't allow moving the targets).
Why not use the NRA Light Rifle rules? All shots at either 50ft or 50 yds (scaled targets, thus comparable), with 1 min per shot (plenty of time). Also A-23 target is easily found online in pdf format. Additional advantage of using NRA rules is that one can also compete against oneself and the Light Rifle Qualification ladder.

Then how about just two classes O and T (including peep) as is usually done?

NRA A-23 50 yard target has a black 4" bull with 7,8,9,10 rings.
What do you think of that?

I like the light rifle approach. I shoot both the A23/5 targets and the CMP Rimfire Sporter targets and for some reason I like the A23/5's better. Maybe no white center? I also like the qualification ladder aspect, which is something that the CMP doesn't have.

As far as rapid fire, if it's not a problem with your range, what I've been doing is taking 5 seconds off the time limit (i.e. 30s for manual actions in the Rimfire Sporter goes to 25s) and with my timer in a convenient position, get in to position and hit the start button. That way you don't have to try and hit the go button as you're getting in position.

I believe that is the CMP Sporter way of classifying sights. Scopes and apertures shoot against each other.

I think the NRA uses the system of any open sight and any sight, which includes telescopes. In this system, I think all open notch rear sights shoot against apertures.

+1. Iron sight and scope catagories. I have a Winchester 52 but want a Mossberg 144 for the same type shooting.

I've been gearing up to just shoot by myself, as there's no rimfire groups around me, so a postal match would be a blast.

Herding in some posts from others...

3P shooting seems like one of the best ways to learn competence with a rifle. You don't get a bench in the field.

Is there a 3P event that requires sporter rifles?
