Marlin 2000

By far one of THE most under-rated rifles of all time. I think the kevlar ones are ever so slightly lighter than the "L" models. With williams sights on them they are as good as most anschutz (With particular ones being better) They are easily on par with the IZH 7-4, save for the marlin's trigger pull which is a tad on the heavy side comparatively. There's a reason that the 2000 has developed a cult following! For the money it's the best rifle out there. I've seen them anywhere from $300-650 in the last 3 months.
An outfit in Indiana will convert any standard accessory rail to a biathlon rail, including the mag release button, for $65. The mags are the same as other marlin repeaters but the Wal-mart variety are 10rd not the UIPMB compliant 5rd.
For kids the 8lbs is heavy, but it conditions them for the heavy 3 position rifles later in life. Long story short, If you see one BUY IT!

This was my retirement present to myself 12 years ago. Never raced with it though I use it still for prone smallbore.
