If your were at a bar and got drunk, cop's would give you a ride home. No DUI arrests.

Mess up too bad in high school, principle or superintendent would whack your back side with the "board of education"

Argument's between boy's, got settled in the gym with boxing gloves, with the whole class watching.

What are your memories?

When we dressed up for Halloween in high school, I came as a commando incl. my nifty Barnett pistol crossbow in a sling across my chest.

Rec'd official permission for it beforehand, with the the only caveat that I wouldn't bring any bolts for it.

A lot of us carried knives. We would go out after dinner on the playground and play that game where you threw the knife in the ground next to the other guys foot and try stretch it out as far as you can. It was fun and no one ever got stuck in the foot.

"Outdoor Rec" in jr. high taught the state "hunter safety class" as part of the curriculum. Since we couldn't shoot rifles in the middle of town, we shot shotguns at clay pigeons beside the football field. Nobody ever complained.

In junior high metal shop we made aluminum sand castings and used a gas-fired forge to heat up steel bars and pound out tools on an anvil. OMG, how dangerous.

That set me on a path to earn a good living in manufacturing for my entire working life.

Bring your shotgun to school the Friday before opening day of squirrel season and check it in at the office. Ride the bus home with your buddy for the big weekend. So excited that you couldn't even sleep the night before. The pickups in the student parking lot had guns in the gun racks for the world to see. Some schools actually closed that friday because of everyone going camping. Never a problem. What the heck happened?

Carried a pocket knife to school every day from 5th grade on, as did everyone else, and there was never an issue. More than one teacher asked to borrow my knife.

The school custodian shoveled coal into the boiler to heat the school.

Good Old Days...

Used to ride my bike to school with my 22 rifle. Mrs Clark would store it until school was out and I would then head to the woods to squirrel hunt.

We also played “stretch “ with our pocket knives. That was almost 60 years ago.

Things have really changed.
