Those are both targets; check SN 37511 (lot # 2957) too, if you don't mind. I wrote down that they are all (Heavy Barrel) unmarked As from the online pictures.
Thanks

S/N is on the left side of the front receiver ring. Perhaps your s/n is 4043. Winchester started at 1 and went to somewhere around 125416.

Your rifle was serial numbered very early in 1925. It is commonly referred to a "Pre A" model. The A revision models began production in early 1935. An entire book has been written about the differences in the models. Suffice to say that each letter in the s/n suffix (A,B,&D) represented a major design change. In the case of the E prefix models, a major s/n change was dictated by the National Firearms law of 1968, which required a different serial number for each major model rifle a company produced.

Not in my opinion, slow lock time, poorest trigger of all the 52's. I would opt for a later 52, like a 52D, and sell the early rifle to a collector.

Winchester 52 serial number 42

I was at Forks of the Delaware River show in Allentown Pa last week. Picked up a Win 52. To my surprise it was serial # 42. Anybody have any history on these rifles. I know that the first 44 Remington 37s were introduced at Camp Perry in 1936. Did Winchester do similar thing with the very first 52's?

Check out wikipedia.org's writeup on the 52 - just plug in "Winchester Model 52".

See if you can find a copy of Herbert Houze's book "The Winchester Model 52" - if you don't want to shell out a bunch of money, you might be able to find one in a library using use worldcat.org.
