What's the average accuracy of your 40x?

I recently acquired a 1957 USMC marked 40X std barrel. I ran a patch or 2 through the barrel when I got it. I removed the redfield olympic sights front and rear and put a leupold vx3 6.5-20 EFR on it for accuracy testing. With rests and windflags it shot right around 5/8"@50yds with centerX, Norma match, and SK match. I took it and scrubbed the barrel and pulled the bolt apart and cleaned what looked like old cosmoline from the firing pin. Took it out this afternoon and the avg group size for all three types was .280.(centerX was barely the winner with .260 avg) I shot 5 5shot groups @50yds with each type. I had a 25 shot group with the SK without watching the flags that was .445. Is this about avg for a 60 year old rifle? Its no full bench rig running 25.00 a box ammo so I figured it was about what these rifle shoot. So how does everyone else 40x shoot

40x USMC

I have two like yours, both USMC's, both shoot very well in my estimation.

This is one of them, 50Yds no wind flags, it has shot better and worse, but this is about average. I have one scoped with a T36 Weaver and the other one wears irons. Sounds like yours is doing OKAY

I have two 40X-B's. One I sporterized. I can shoot almost any ammo into 1/2" or less at 50 yards. Since I'm not a competition shooter I can't tell you what scores I have had. But I can shoot the primers out of 308 brass and like sized brass at 50 yds. I shoot mostly High Velocity ammo as I am a gopher hunter. I have shot many thousands of rounds of ammo of all kinds including the real expensive flavors of target ammo. My scopes for accuracy work are Leupold VX3 6.5X20.
Here is one of my targets.

Federal 922A is .363 for 4 5 shot groups and .446 for 3 5 shot groups of Center-X.

After that I have only shot mostly irons on the A23 at 50 yard target. Benchrested it has done 1 200-20X and a lot of 18 and 19X targets.

It has been in an XR stock. I am going to build a benchrest style stock for it and try some scoped shooting. When I did this for my Anschutz, its scores went up dramatically.

Factory spec. @ 100 yds.

FWIW, the Remington spec. factory reqmt. for their 40x tgt. rifles was was a 10 rnd. group of less than 1.0 in. CTC @ 100 yds. (indoors). As you know, most rifles were considerably more accurate! Great rifles...

I think 5 groups on one target are the way to go, but how did you measure them?

Measure the group and subtract one bullet diameter which will give you center to center measurment of your group.

Well, that is what I thought until looking at those groups. They are good, but.

40x

I have a 40x , it shoots way better than the shooter . I shoot 50 yard only with Weaver T16 . I have many times shot through the same hole . It really doesn't prefer any ammo over another . My favorite 2 are CCI and Wolf . I clean and scrub after every trip to the range , including trigger and bolt . I shoot 5 rounds to warm up barrel and crud it up , before settling on accuracy . Mine is heavy barrel and set in an M40 walnut stock . The 40x took years to find , it's a keeper and will be passed on to family which do not have a clue what it is .
