Until the 17WSM came out the 5MM was the most powerful rimfire cartridge (chamber pressure) ever put on the market. The thin rimfire brass that the 5MM is drawn from will blow out releasing 32,000 psi into the reciever if it is not completely inclosed in steel, including extractor slots, thus the difficulty of converting other rifles to fire the 5MM. Remington figured out how to use a dual extractor system by having the left hand extractor actually form part of the chamber.

Their solution is very good but expensive to make. Some of the very early rifle that were subject to recal did not have the 4 screw cover left had coverplate that is so unusual on the 5MM rifles. It looks like a patch because it is. Should a left hand extractor become broke or is left out of the rifle, it become very dangerous and has been known to cause personal life changing damage. If the Remington rifles are in good shape and well maintained they are as safe as any other.

I have yet to see how Savage and Winchester solved this with the 17WSM but I would guess that a thicker case would help.
