Butt plate question

OK, I know this is probably really dumb but I have to ask anyway.

Do the plastic butt plates on the older WIN 22s, in this case specifically M-69A, shrink? I have 2 69As and on one the butt plate is a bit small and on the other it is easily 1/16" on the sides and top and 3/32" on the toe, smaller than the wood. I can't verify that the butt is correct on either rifle, I bought them used, but they seem correct.

I know some plastics warp and/or distort with time but I don't know if shrinkage is also possible.

Out here in NOCO it is highly unlikely that the wood would swell enough to cause either situation. If it was reversed, wood smaller than butt plate, I would figure that to be normal.

How does one determine what is a correct butt plate for a given rifle. One is an earlier model which had the target sight and the other is a later model with the target sight and grooved receiver. The latter is the one with the drastically undersized butt plate.

Yes, the Acetate Butyrate butt plates absolutely shrink. However, the earlier (pre-war) hard composition (rubber) butt plates did not shrink hardly at all.

To determine the correct butt plate you need to know the rifle model and vintage. The butt plates were changed over the years, both in style and material.

What exactly do you have? The grooved receiver rifle should have the non-trademarked round logo and is possibly made of a different material circa 1962 depending on the actual vintage of the rifle.

Regards,
