17hmr 50yd & 100yd Club

I'm very new to the 17hmr's and but would like to propose a fun shoot for the
17hmr shooters like the .22 guys have with less groups with the cost of ammo being considered.

Game #1 50 yards for 17hmr & 17hm2

Here are the rules:

1. Any 17hmr or 17hm2 rifle with any sights or scope
2. 50yards from rifle to target indoors or outdoors
3. 2, 5 shot groups on one target, add the two together and divide by 2 for
the average, if the average size is .300" or less makes the club
4. One of the targets below must be used to participate.
5.2 single shots per target need to be shot to determine bullet diameter
6. Groups are figured by measuring outside to outside and subtracting the bullet diameter (avg of the two single shots)

Let the fun begin. :AR15firin

Game #2 100 yards for 17hmr & 17hm2

Here are the rules:

1. Any 17hmr or 17hm2
2. 100 yards from rifle to target
3. Any stock, Any scope, Any sights
4.2, 4 shot groups, measured outside to outside and subtracting the bullet diameter (avg of the two single shots)
5. Average for the 2 groups= 1.00" or less and your in the CLUB
6. One of the targets below must be used to participate

GOOD LUCK! I'll keep a second list of the 100 yard CLUB members.

Another Target that can be used is below. The cross hairs are slightly thicker, and the "square" is "1 inch" for reference while shooting the 1.00" or less groups for the 100 yard club. Just another option for you.

rico, congrats again!
I added the correct way of figuring the group size to the rules as rule #5. Look at it and let me know if it doesn't make since, I know what I'm trying to say but sometimes doesn't come thru clear ;)

3/4" @ 100 yds......hmmm.........I'll let you start that one.

Hopefully I'll get to try again at the 50 yard game, if the weather co-ops.

#29 ·
My CZ 452 is begging to come out of the safe. :) Later this week, after the severe weather, I'll start tinkering with groups at 50 yards. (It's not practical to shoot in 40 MPH gusts!)

As for the 100 yard 3/4" group metioned, I can qualify for that. I'll only post a link since this thread is about 50 yard groups.

I have a fun mod. in progress. The tracking number was just sent to me. After that, I have some machining to do. I'll post pictures soon. (Good and Bad!) :D

s&w,

your game @ 50 <.300 = 5/16". maybe 1-1.25" groups @ 100 may be more
realistic. it could be incorporated into your existng game, just have a sub
category added in, and should be inneresting, as the wind creates havoc with
these .17's, lol, but is a good challenge tho'

oh boy, s&w,

now we are at or close to a MOA @ 100. ( 1.049" )this is gonna be inneresting. have a 100 yd backstop set up. have been shooting out of the back window during the cold months, but only out to 60 yards, max. now, i gotta go and sit out in the cold, brrrr, but a good one to see how others can do. have shot at 100 before, just haven't done it for a while. now ya got me going. lol, but will give it a good go at it soon.
always enjoy a good challenge,

rico....

s&w,

yea, that was a big laff on the SS forum, but for 100 yds will be outside. all
i need to do is mzr out 100 yds from the furthest backstop and move the shooting table back 20-30 yds, no biggee. will take a pic later, maybe tomorrow, of my back of the house "range".

but will be giving it a "shot" soon enuff, lol, just to see, and will post pics
of the groups, good, bad or fugly,

rico....

The target is in the original post, jpg file. Should be able to right click on it and print it.

I'll be out of town for the weekend, so all those that post those qualifying targets I'll enter your name in the CLUB upon my return.

HAPPY EASTER!

I tried hard today even with the wind (10 to 20 MPH gust) but could not get there. Knew I was not quite getting there so I did not bother to shoot the single shots, but did the math anyway. This is way harder than I thought it would be. Putting 2 good groups together on the same target is quite a bit more difficult.
I'm one humbled Duck right now. Had one target that the first 4 shots where one slightly enlarged hole and ....... 5th shot was a 1/2 inch high! GRRRRR. Second groups was sad since I was so pissed at messing up the first.

Only person happy with my attempts is some Hornady marketer. I have had a dozen wonderful target sides, with the other all to heck.

Not giving up, but am ordering ammo online, local Gander is killing me!

mchughcb,

I think the cartridge is completely capable of all it has been made out to be, give the right conditions (little or no wind). The problem is the person behind the trigger! This is not as easy as everyone would like to think it is, which is obvious by the number of folks who have viewed but not added to the list. After my failed attempt yesterday I'm finding it is not the gun or the cartridge but me and my bench set up being the problem. Like most shooting sports 90% mental. I shot about 8 groups of 4 that would pass the test, that 5th round was always the zinger. Not always the last shot. I find I really need to build or buy a better rear bag for bench shooting like this. A couple of sad sand bags in the rear just do not provide the consistent solid support needed. Then add in all the other factors of breathing, trigger control, wind and weather, other shooters, the crappy target frames my club has (APEXDUCK excuse # 7, now I'm sounding like a trap shooter with a list of excuses).

I will get out on Sunday and try to join the list. of the special few. Good luck to all. This is not a cake walk like some would seem to think.

That includes me. I'm still waiting on decent weather. We've had high winds in between rain showers. I now have the new part made for the rifle, and the rest is ready.

Someday soon, I'll post pictures. I don't want my pictures to show my 'weather report'! :)

Give it some time

I know that for myself, between the weather (windy most days) and extra shifts at work I haven't had time to have a go at it. I did shoot a few shots from my Marlin and think it will give it a good try but I was busy testing cheap ammo for my .22s and ran out of time.
Since I have several .22s that will make this and my Savage .17 was more accurate than them at 100 yards I think as soon as I can combine a day off with some decent weather I just may make it. I really wanted to post early and make it but I can't turn down the extra shifts at work when they are available. Not with the rising costs of ammo, anyway.

Apexduck that is why I started this thread, it wasn't supposed to be easy, just fun :p for us regular shooters. I had thought about making the .300" bigger at first but ricochet talked me out of it and then he goes and makes it look easy with his great shooting.

Good luck to all..........I hope to get back out and try it soon if the weather ever changes.

I love reading the posts that say oh this looks like fun I'll give it a shot this weekend and they seem like it will be a piece of cake and for some reason I haven't seen to many posts with range reports in them............maybe they haven't made it to the range yet.

Dang

Well, I tried this morning and the Savage was off it's game and I didn't have time to clean it so I gave my Marlin a try. I would keep 4 shots in a one hole (ragged) and then I would pull the 5th shot. It has a new trigger in it and I am still trying to get used to it. I will try again and hope for better luck then.

Darn, it is still just Rico who made it? Come on, can't someone else keep him company?

haha,

yea, guys it's getting lonely. need someone else to BS with.

FFrank, ive seen your groups on the SS/A forum, and know you can do it.
must be the weather, or the ammo, or?

with having to shoot only two groups, i think i just lucked out and the
almighty Kahuna was watching over me.

now you got me to thinking if i can do it again. most likely not. dont even
rem what ammo i used, lol, CCI tnt? but dont wanna push my luck, haha,

rico....
