Winchester 77 - using a snap cap to protect firing pin

I bought a wonderful, somewhat rare, Winchester 77, 15-round, tube-feeder (wonderful to me, anyway). Very nice, very accurate. But my model does not have a bolt-hold-open after the last round. Unless I count every round, every time, I sometimes dry-fire it after the tube is empty.

I thought placing a .22 snap cap in the tube as a 15th round would at least prevent the firing pin dry-firing and avoid damage. Comments? Ideas? Where is the best place to find a user's manual? Thanks in advance.

Photos later once I refurb the stock.

Talking 77 is a fine rifle

I wouldn't worry about a dry fire ever so often, it hasn't hurt mine. none of the 77s had a last shot hold open, but my late model tube fed has the manual bolt hold open button. after I clean it I drop the hammer on a yellow plastic wall anchor. one bit of info , unless you really know this rifle, I do not advise a full tear down, many hard to re install small parts ! I just hose mine down with spray gun scrubber. if it aint broke don't fix it !!
